Does Jindal's budget prevent LSU from making a coaching move?

LSU would take a tremendous PR hit if we paid off a coach to leave. I love Jindal but think he is responsible?
thoughts??

LSU athletics recieve zero state money. Jindal has no connection here.

LSU Football is self sufficient. It actually covers more than just the football budget.

I think the school is only responsible for ~$300,000 of Les' salary. Not sure if that comes from state money or from funds the school has that are generated by football.

This
LSU Athletics is actually responsible for contributing money back into the LSU general education fund.
LSU is the only public university in the state to receive no public money for athletics

Yes because Jindal is sick of CLM and wants to coach the team himself

....Actually, the state budget cuts are adversely effecting the LSU coaching situation.
Athough the LSU athletic office is self supportive, it and TAF are cash cows.
If you recall, there was rumblings about LSU getting money from the athletic department last year.
Also, it is very difficult in these dire financial years to justify a 15 million dollar buyout to a coach with a winning record.
Even if LSU and TAF had the money for a buyout, there would be a problem. If LSU and TAF stash away millions for a buyout, the university is gonna come a knocking. They won't be able to get it from TAF but, they can get it from the athletic department which is a subdivision of the university.

Yes it does affect LSU athletics. The auxillary fee went from 3% to 5% and this years budget cut will be even greater than years past. There has been talks of raising the auxillary fee to 7%, which is truly worrisome since the jump from 3 to 5% caused quite a commotion.
Gov. Jindal to ask for Larger Cuts to Higher Education
Dec. 22, 2009, The Advocate
There are challenges in cutting higher education too much because federal stimulus dollars currently plugging funding gaps for colleges have rules that the college budgets cannot be cut below certain levels.
Davis said last week that the Jindal administration may seek a waiver from the federal government that would allow more cuts for higher education.

State budget woes causing athletic cuts
LINK
LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva will have added duties because of state budget cuts

For the Record: Clarifications and Commentaries from LSU Athletics
LINK
The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted.
LSU will be sending pep bands to each of the four road conference games in 2009. The band will bus to and from each location on the day of the game for three of those games with no hotel stay in order to facilitate the cost necessary to send a pep band to Washington. There will be no full band trip to any road game except a post-season bowl game. These measures will result in cost savings of $125,000 to $150,000 for the athletics program during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

Alleva may also be forced to cut his payroll depending on how the University budget cuts trickle down to the athletic department.
Since assuming his position last summer, he’s already cut three positions: an assistant to the athletic director, an accounting position and an administrative assistant.
“There’s a lot of other people in this department besides coaches, and the preponderance of the people in this department are not going to get a raise this year,” he said.
Some open staff positions are frozen and some filled positions could be in jeopardy while coaching salaries continue to escalate. The trend is not one Alleva appreciates, but he understands the driving force for competitiveness.
It’s difficult for Alleva to predict how much of a hit his department will take. He said he is preparing for the worst by cutting corners in hopes of not harming competitive efforts.
One area of cutbacks could be the Tigers’ travel funds, which amount for about 6 percent of the athletic department’s $75 million budget.
The economy could also affect the department’s willingness to schedule long distance, out-of-conference opponents.
“You may not play Utah [in basketball] anymore,” Alleva said. “You may say, ‘That’s too far away.’ You may say, ‘We’re only going to play [non-SEC] teams that are within a bus ride.’”
The basketball teams typically bus to SEC opponents within a six-hour radius but only if the game is scheduled on the weekend to avoid class conflicts. Busing a team costs just $3,000 to $4,000.

I know it's irrelevant to the discussion about Miles, but this statement is not true. LSU, LSUE, LSUA, and LSUS all receive $0.00 from the state for athletics.

the connection is indirect
athletic spending is influenced by state funds tho... before the season there was a discussion about whether LSU could afford to send the band on the trip to Washington
This sounded ridiculous if one believes the football program is a serious revenue generator (which it is) separated from academic funding. Based on teh comments from the AD at the time tho? It appears when funding gets cut it that more money must come from somewhere and that can be athletics in one form or another.
Functionally I think LSU would be very reluctant to pay Miles to go right now even if there was consensus that was the right thing to do. If it were to happen (say after a bad season next year) it would have to be from a major push (including millions of dollars) from TAF IMO

see my post above...
LSU was originally going to not send a pep band to Washington because of budget concerns. There was such an outcry from the fans that LSU decided to forgo the full band being at an away SEC game in order to send a pep band to Washington.

maybe they could cut some of the dozens of asst. athletic directior positions. there's probably some other redundent positions in that dept. also, i read where a high school coach in monroe paid for the lsu coaches lunches on a recruiting trip yesterday. that should save some.

I heard it had some affect on decision to keep Crowton. And also is part of the reason they are going to deny Miles the contract extension this year.

You heard wrong then. TAF is responsible for ponying up the cash for coaching hires, not the state of Louisiana.
