Miles & the LSU Coaches made SEVEN critical end game errors

1) Approximately 4:20 left in the game, and we finally stop Ole Miss and they are going to be forced to take a field goal, which will put them up 8 points. We should have called a timeout in order to not let 35 seconds wind off the clock. We did not.
2) After driving down the field, we score a touchdown to pull within 2 with 1:17 left. Needing a 2-pt conversion to possibly force overtime, we throw a fade route. Bailed out by pass interference, we throw a fade route AGAIN. Incomplete. I never like fade routes on plays that you have to convert such as 4th and goal or a 2-pointer, because they seem to be, at best, about a 1 out of 3 conversion rate. It’s too high risk. Raise your hand out there if you have ever seen a team run a fade route on a 2-pt conversion when they HAD to have it OR on a 4th and 1 play in the middle of the field. Yeah, me neither.
3) Nevertheless, we were bailed out of those two bad coaching moves by our players converting an onsides kick! Yes!
4) We move the ball to the opponent’s 32 yard line with over a minute left. Now, I will say that I agree with continuing to be aggressive here. I mentioned earlier this year that college coaches too often overestimate the abilities of their kickers and settle for long field goals. I think that we should have been trying to move the ball to set up a FG of less than 40 yards. BUT: This is a big deal here. Our kicker had made one from 50 earlier in the day, and we HAD to have the FG in order to win, so we should have done nothing to lose field position. While not optimal, the position we were in right there was at least possible that we could win. However, after an incompletion on first down, our quarterback takes a sack! A SACK that moves us out of FG range! First, he’s gotta to know better. Second, our coaches have to know that he’s been susceptible to deep drop sacks all season and call something quick. Dangit. Timeout.
5) The very next play was a swing pass that loss 7 yards. How in the world do we call that?
6) But here is where the biggest error of the day comes in. Our player was tacked with 26 seconds remaining on the clock. And it was now 4th and 26. We failed to get the timeout called for 17 seconds, finally doing so with 9 seconds left. Holy schnikies. How in the world can you allow that much time to slip away? That is truly inexcusable. HOWEVER, if we had correctly executed 1) above, there would have been 1:01 left on the clock when he got tackled (and no timeouts) but we still would have had plenty of time to get to the line and run the Hail Mary play that worked with that play starting at no less than 20 seconds or so left.
7) We run the Hail Mary. Complete it to the 6 and there is 1 second left. This is not really an issue, because I am sure that this almost never happens, but you cannot attempt to spike the ball with 1 second left. And I don’t even think the play was officially run. But still, you have to know that at least 1 second runs off when the ball is spiked, so the ONLY choice there is do I try to run the FG team on, or try to run an offensive play?
Any one of these goes the other way and we at worst have overtime, at best win the game.

the biggest error of all was miles not telling his players what to do if they got a first down and no touchdown. totally unprepared for what happened.

The 1st and 2nd down pass plays were legit frick ups and so was waiting to call TO until 9 seconds. The others were Noy necessarily horrible IMO.
I don't see why people are so pissed about the 2 pt try. We had a great match up with Toliver. We had also only gained like 40 yards on the ground all game.

I see the word "unprepared" over and over in these threads. I think that's the most disappointing thing all year for most of us....the unprepared players by the unprepared coaching staff.
LSU has a roster full of very high quality players and it's just a shame to see the unprepared coaching staff do that to the excellent and athletic players we have.
Tragic almost.

That was a mistake, but not the biggest. It would have been tough to get a play off anyway. We definitely should not have tried to spike it, but we would have had plenty of time if we had just called timeout as soon as Ridley was tackled on 3rd down. That much time running off before the timeout is inexcusable.

Wouldn't have mattered. As soon as the ref signals ball ready the clock starts. The ball wasn't even snapped when the clock was gone. FG or whatever, no play because there was not enough time for the center to bend over and snap it.

I dont think they really thought that we would convert the Hail Mary pass.

This is actually the one that burns me up the most, not because it's the most incompetent of the series, but because I think it begs the question of the entire season:
WHY THE frick CAN'T WE HAVE MORE CLEVER FORMATIONS IN SHORT YARDAGE SITUATIONS THAT USE RUSSELL frickING SHEPARD?!!?!?!?!?
You see virtually every other team in the conference with some kind of wildcat or other formation that creates confusion and misdirection. shite, Ole Miss scored one of their TD's on just such a play. But no, LSU throws 2 timing loops in a row. Un fricking believable.

not if they were prepared for what happened. 27 seconds is plenty of time.

Because it's a low percentage play. When you have to have a 2-point conversion, you run a high percentage play.
Tell you what. Start watching football this weekend and tell me if any other team runs a fade route for a 2-point conversion the rest of the year. I would wager that you will not see it again.
Because it fails more often than it works.

The match up with Toliver was unbelievable. A run play was just as low percentage with our shitty OL. If we had any type of run game I would agree.
If Jefferson throws a half way decent pass then Toliver probably scores.

Good analysis. #6 was the real killer in my opinion.

Your #4 is way off.
That sack is 100% on Crowten. We need 10 yards and he calls a play with three deep routes and no drop off. Plus, we have a QB with a bum ankle, so that takes away his ability to scramble. It may have been the worse play call of the game - even worse than the two fade routes to Tolliver.
We could have run one guy deep and had three routes within ten yards so that Jefferson has chance to actually get rid of the ball without having to wait for three seconds in the pocket before the routes are run.

if you are a smart coached team the whle freakng team is set including center over ball ref will hold hands up and move to his spot before signaling for clock to start, play shoulda gotten off, all of this was a total breakdown on coaches part all of them not just Miles but in the end it falls on him !
there is no excuse for what happened...... and b/c he has had moments like this in past that team or luck or he bailed hisself out of makes this 10x's worse.

I'll take my chances with KW (who averaged 5.5 ypc) or RS from the one yard line.

I agree with you, but I put some of the blame on Jefferson for taking the sack.
A quarterback has to have awareness of the game situation and play. He had neither in that point...
But there should have been a play called that was a quick slant or a 5-8 yard out to the short side. Anything to get rid of the ball quickly and take away the danger of the sack.

Fine. 99% Crowten, 1% Jefferson. Our coaches consistently put our players in the worst situation possible.

On the 2 point conversion's second attempt, don't forget, we we half the usual distance to the goal there. A run call would have been appropriate.

....Bottom line: only one "brain-lock" cost us a chance at winning. To wit:
With 1st down near the Ole Miss 30 yd line- a perfectly doable FG range for our kicker - , about a minute left and a time out remaining, and given the fact you are only in that position because of a series of miracle plays by our players, including the on side kick, you only have TWO THINGS - JUST TWO ( too much for our coaches, perhaps? ) - TO DO OR BE CONCERNED WITH FOR STRATEGY/GAME MANAGEMENT:
1. Ball security/no turnover. Best way for that? Simple, safe running plays.
2. DO NOT, above all else, lose your field position THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE. That means , especially, YOU CANNOT TAKE A SACK! Best way for that? Well for one - DO NOT CALL A FRIGGIN' PASS PLAY!! Its so damn OBVIOUS: Simple , safe running plays. I mean WTF!?
Thats ALL we had to do. Thats all. Period. Worst case scenario
( outside a highly unlikely fumble/turnover) is our very solid kicker GETS A CHANCE TO WIN THE GAME! Yeah, maybe he misses...but at least we get our shot to win, fer Cryin' out loud!
