Went to the Germantown vs. Ridgeway game last night to watch Justin Maclin play. I took video of almost all of the defensive plays for Ridgeway (I missed 5 plays in the 1st half). He is wearing white, is #1, and is the near-side DE end in every play.

I did not selectively remove good or bad plays...as you will see, I taped entire possessions. The video was taken with a hand-held flip video camera. Although the quality isn't great, you will be able to tell what type of player Maclin is, I believe.

This is the 2nd game of his I have seen this season. He played middle LB in the 1st game, and defensive end in this one. I have no video of the 1st game, but his performance in that game was very similar to what you will see here.

Also of note, he is strictly a defensive player and has not played one offensive snap in either game I have attended. So, what you see in these tapes is his total effort in the game.

Watched the first half of the video. Man he looks like he doesn't give a rats arse. It's like he moves away to help open holes for the running back and he half asses his pursuit. He looks the part though. Hopefully the coaches light a fire when he gets on campus. Very disappointing.

hes a sack specialist.. this offense took his best qualities away from him..

he uses his speed to get around blockers to sack the quarterback..

he's not going to wow anyone with his strength..

but yeah that was sort of disappointing..

He looked slow, but obviously he is not from his measurables. I think he was just being lazy, which sucks to see.

I was at that game (in the band). Maclin looked great for playing such an option oriented team (Germantown runs the wishbone 90+% of the time). Luckily, Germantown still won, but it was a great game. Which side did you sit on?

I watched the first video and I noticed that every play was inside or to the other side. He held contain which means nothing went around his end. He didn't look blazing fast but he covered the option to his side every play. Sometimes these ends are instructed to just keep the play inside to give the linebackers a chance to make the play.

I do not like to post negative things about recruits, so I have made no comment about his play.

However, I do have a question...what did you see Maclin do that made him look great?

Regarding recruiting "experts" evaluations of players...after watching these videos, do you think the expert is correct, or should he re-evaluate Maclin?

From my initial reaction at the game (I didn't watch the videos) it looked like he was in on a lot of plays.

I had him with two tackles, and falling on one pile. This does not mean he played poorly...maybe they ran away from him all night. The only way to evaluate that is to actually watch the films.

BTW, I was on the Germantown side...have a kid that is a red devil.

Mr. Plant, oops..Mr. Houseplants, perhaps you should read about the game on the Ridgeway site? Justin Maclin recorded 6 tackles. There is plenty of Official Video on that site. I noticed you happen to be the same age as Ed Orgeron. Weird huh?

Anyway, here is the site. Maybe those "Missing plays" will show up?

I said up front that I failed to tape the 1st defensive possession and two other plays.

It is possible that I miscounted by one or two assists. I can tell you that the Ridgeway site credited Maclin for 12 tackles (I think) in the other game I attended...he was in on 5 takles at the most in that game...maybe there is an attempt to paint his play in the best possible light over at Ridgeway.

I watched the game in person, I did not need to go to their site, but I did, and they do not show any defensive plays that were not accounted for in the videos I posted.

I am posting these videos so that tiger fans can evaluate for themselves what type of player Maclin is...it benefits me in no way if he is considered a great player or a not-so great player...I have nothing against Justin Maclin...I am just a tiger fan that is interested in the players that we are recruiting.

So, Mr Sammich, what is your take on the footage that I have posted here, or the footage that you must have watched on the Ridgeway site?

I never saw McClain play in high school, but I cannot imagine seeing him play and not seeing him lay licks on people all over the field.

I for one appreciate your post. Maclin did appear to me to be lackadazicle in his efforts on each play. It appeared to this person who watched the videos that he could not or would not shed the tackles blocks. There were several times it appeared to me he could have blown the play up by just by blowing the tackle or end into the hole. He does not impress me at all.

First of all he was playing out of position. He played on the end the whole game. He had to stay home on plays because the team that they were playing ran a lot of misdirection. By the time he could tell where the play was going it was already too late to contribute. I saw three plays which were run outside his end. While he was blocked and the running back got outside three times, he made the tackle twice. If he would have been playing linebacker, I am sure he would have been more active.

ricky, I watched a game earlier in the year when he was playing MLB. I can assure you that he was playing out of position in that game...it was less impressive than this game, but I have no video.

The two tackles you referred to were both over 15 yards down the field, so I would not consider those highlights.

I personally was surprised that he was so easily blocked by RBs on at least 6 off-tackle plays to his side of the field.

He has the size, speed and strength to be a great player. My question for anyone that watches this video is: if you were a recruiting guru, how would you evaluate his play after watching an entire game (at least defensive game) in total? Is he a top 250-type player? Is he a player that will be successful in the SEC?
