We were never interested in Culpepper.

If we didn't get Brees we'd have gotten one of the QB's in the draft. Hopefully Cutler.

Drew definitely preferred the Dolphins over the Saints. He was willing to sign with Miami for far less than the Saints were offering. Ultimately Saban wasn't even willing to sign Drew for a relatively cheap price and went with Culpepper, forcing Drew to sign with us and pretend he was thrilled about it.

It's been forgotten and I'm sure in hindsight Drew is thrilled that he wound up here. And really - that's all that matters.

Why did he sign with the Saints before Miami closed on Culpepper? Culpepper wasn't a done deal for Miami at the time.

Saints get cool Brees, Dolphins close on Culpepper

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New Orleans Saints signed free agent Drew Brees on Tuesday, going with a proven quarterback rather than one of the highly touted prospects available in April's NFL draft.

With the second overall selection, the Saints might have had their pick of Matt Leinart, the University of Southern California Heisman trophy-winning quarterback, or Texas Longhorns' dynamic Vince Young.

They chose, however, to sign Brees to a six-year deal worth a reported $60 million.

The move could prove to be a gamble for the Saints with Brees still recovering from surgery on his right shoulder which he injured in the San Diego Chargers' final game.

The NFL's comeback player of the year in 2004, the gritty Brees played 16 games for the Chargers last season, passing for a career-high 3,576 yards and 24 touchdowns.

It was also reported on Tuesday that the Miami Dolphins were close to acquiring disgruntled Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper for a second round pick in this year's draft.

I'm telling you Drew had the Miami door closed on him before he signed here. They may not have formally signed Daunte yet but they had decided not to sign Drew and to let the Saints overpay for him if they wanted him so bad.

True story. Culpeppers status not withstanding, Miami moved on from Brees before Drew signed with us

If Brees fell through, Payton may have taken another shot at trading for his preferred QB of the future, a then-unknown he'd coached in Dallas named Tony Romo.

Romo's not as good as Brees, but he's a damn sight more competent than Leinart or Young.
