Per my understanding of the rules, the PI called against Alem was clearly incorrect.

We found out at Auburn a while back that it is alright to tackle the intended receiver as long as the ball was eventually tipped.

Clearly, Alem tackled the receiver but the ball was later tipped.

The head of SEC Officials, Rodgers Redding, even came out after the Auburn game and validated that call as the proper call. So, have the rules changed since then or is Rodgers Redding just a liar? Can anyone tell me any difference between Auburn's tackle and eventual tip and Alem's tackle and eventual tip?

I believe the call yesterday was because he was not playing the ball. Is that still a rule? Was the ball tipped before it got to the receiver? I think it was a good call, damnit. Clearly the receiver was Alems man and he let him get behind him. I love that play. I remember when Les used to call plays like that, not anymore. Why?

The ball has to be tipped before you touch the receiver. If you interfere with the receiver before the ball is tipped it is still pass interference. What happened at Auburn is that the referee was saying that the ball was tipped before the interference. The replay showed different. The refs were allowed to review if the ball was tipped but by rule they can not review a penalty. They missed the call at Auburn, but got it right yesterday.

You over looked the footnote to the definition of "pass interference" on page 69 of the officiating manual that references the "Auburn Alternative Rule". This rule allows for alternative rule making by the officials on the field as long as two criteria are met: 1) Auburn is on the field; and 2) the alternative interpretation benefits Auburn.

This rule has been invoked numerous times over the years and not limited to pass interference calls (can include other things such as the definition of a "catch", illegally returning to earth during a field goal attempt, etc and so on)

The call should have been defensive holding on auburn, imo.
