I am hesitant to judge Chavis too harshly...

although I was displeased with the defensive execution and gameplan.
Here is why:
(1) It was his very first game as LSU's defensive coordinator. There simply isn't enough evidence to properly guage his performance yet. A jury shouldn't convict after the first witness steps down;
(2) I imagine that this was a very difficult game to scout. Washington had a brand new coach who was unveiling a novel scheme. Sure, LSU could look at old USC games to guage the Sark offense, but frankly the quasi-spread we saw tonight was quite unlike the USC offense in several important respects. It was really a fusion of a pro-style offense and a spread option. The bottom line is that there was NO TAPE which LSU could look at truly understand the Washington offense. No one in the known universe had ever witnessed a Locker led Sarkasian offense before. Any preparation necessarily involved extrapolation, deduction, and guesswork. No other Washtington opponent will face the same obstacle.
Let's at least wait and see how Chavis gameplans for Vandy and UGA and Florida before we reach any conclusions about his talent.
If the defense continues to play poorly and LSu struggles to another mediocre season, we'll have plenty to discuss. But we just don't have enough information yet.
In the meantime, let's enjoy a tough road victory. We're 1-0!

at what point in the game should he make an adjustment when that soft shite was getting gashed on every 3rd down? I guess you have to wait until after the game to change anything if you dont have any film on their offense.

If I remember correctly, Chavis made the comment in the offseason that at this level the secondary should play mostly man to man. Tonight we played zone until the 4th quarter when the game was in the balance. This makes me think that the scheme may have been very vanilla in accordance to the gameplan. I wonder what we will show next week in a conference game.

novel as in the same offense USC has run since 2000?

they ran like 2 SO plays

Actually, his in-game adjustments seemed very effective, as proven by the precipitous drop-off in the passing yards in the second half (excluding the garbage time TD drive).

Wow. Having already proven that you are bereft of all defensive knowledge, you boldly endeavor to show that you also lack all offensive knowledge.
And you've succeeded. I would explain the differences, but no doubt you would then pretend that you were already aware of them. So I leave it to you to puzzle this one out.
Moreover, your entire position is shown to be a reactionary farce by your insistence that you can guage Chavis after one game. The other years you allude to necessarily featured vastly different personnel and vastly different circumstances, making them poor comparables.

Chavis was great if you like the exact things that got the last DC's fired

We got burned on a zone blitz the first drive and it may have affected how he called the game from that point on. Also, we were playing with a lead for most of the game, and you tend to play more conservatively as in let them move the ball, but don't give up an easy score.

UW ran the same offense that norm chow has been running since the motherfricking 1980s

Bo Pelini's first LSU game was a nightmare against ASU if y'all recall. The Sun Devils threw the ball all over the Tigers that night.

I agree. There was second half adjustment and improvement was evident as the yardage total dropped to 180ish for UW.
Apparently it is hard to read with tear blurred eyes as the two previous posters missed the point that the offensive system was not a direct copy of USC which is not a spread attack. They also missed the point that a the UW attack was not a true spread either.
We'll continue to see improvement as the year goes on. At this point, at least the 12-0 and 11-1 expectations can temper and 10-2 and 9-3 for a young, developing team can take over. No matter how this game played out, this team should not lose 5 games. IMO

The Tigers are still learning to play with each other in a new defense. You have to be clueless to expect them to play as if they should be in mid-season form.

Agreed. But do you remember, once upon a time, being happy about getting the other team into a 3rd and 8 or more? That was the shot in the gut for me tonight. Maybe I'm wrong, but UW's ability to convert so consistently on 3rd and long seems like more of scheme failure than an execution failure.

Yeah, um, adding an expletive to a bald assertion doesn't make that assertion true.
What amazes me is that it is patently obvious that you have no factual basis for your claims. In order to actually support that ridiculous statement, you would have to conduct a breakdown of the plays called tonight, then assemble an analysis of the BYU offenses that Chow led in the 1980's, then compare the two to etablish identity. Of course you haven't done that in the last two hours. And of course you aren't even qualified to attempt it. If I am just supposed to take your word for it, I'll pass, as any tenuous credibility you might have once enjoyed was shattered by your ignorant diatribe on corner play.

Locker is a run threat every time he takes a snap. Which SC team is that comparable to?
Posted on 9/6/09 at 3:00 am to SlowFlowPro
I don't remember Palmer, Leinart, Booty, Sanchez, or BYU days of Detmer, etc running naked boot legs or running for tons of yardage. Locker is a very good QB who no one on this Board gave any respect. Watch football games of other teams before you speak about them.
