Return Specialist

My one frustration with LSU over the course of the last few years has been that unlike other teams (OU and Florida come to mind), LSU refuses to use young talent as (ETA: kick/punt) return specialists. Yes, Trindon has been a kick returner since his greyshirt-freshman year, but punt returner is a revolving door. Guys like John Williams and Ron Brooks (until recently) have ridden the pine. I can only assume they didn't field countless reps in practice as potential return specialists.
All this to get to my point... will Drayton Calhoun finally get the chance to be the return specialist that recent Tiger teams have been unable to send out on the field?

Not likely. Unless injury occurs or our returners get a bad case of fumbleitis, look for Holliday and Jones to return punts.

it'll be tridnon til he drops a bunch
then chad jones not doing much
but Miles never squanders talent

I should have prefaced my post by saying I didn't necessarily mean this season... especially of course if Calhoun redshirts. I just hope he doesn't get lost in the shuffle behind more prototypical RBs throughout the course of his career and not get the opportunity to be a topflight return man.

Yeah it sure was nice when we had Skyler Green back returning punts, and going back further Eddie Kennison. You always had the feeling that we had a chance to take one back or at least change field position.

it sure would be nice to have someone back there who you could feel confident about fielding the ball and also be dangerous once he gets the ball. Holiday makes me nervous when he's back there and Jones isn't going to do anything with it once he catches it. Why haven't or have guys like maybe Jai Eugene, Ron Brooks, John Williams, Chris Tolliver, Tim Molton, Jyryn Taylor, Chris Mitchell, RJ Jackson, Patrick Peterson. Any one of them seem to fit bill better than Holiday or Jones.

Very dangerous return man in high school. He was the return man in the Army All-American game as well. I can understand not using him at LSU so as not to put him at risk of injury.

These are the two that have been downright baffling. At least Brooks got a couple of shots at the end of last year and looked good.
Maybe these guys have been getting looks in practice and we just don't know, but of course I'm a pessimist and I just assume these uber-talented guys that were dangerous return men in high school are standing on the sidelines during practice counting clouds.

he's more likely to be hurt playing D than he is returning punts

Maybe... but if you lose him to an injury sustained at CB, it's bearable. If you lose him to an injury sustained returning a punt, that'll haunt you for the rest of the year.

I am definitly for TH returning punts but I really don't agree much with Chad Jones doing it. I think we should have a smallerand quicker guy doing it.
