Two reactions to Miles announcements

Chavis on the sideline -- Maybe Miles is thinking that Chavis has brought a lot of swagger to the defense that it didn't have last year, but wow, I think Chavis has coached from the booth all of his career and I don't see how a DC can really be effective from the sideline. (You can't see anything from the sideline in a football game.) When I think of a DC on the sideline, I think of Tepper with that little mini-stadium thing he made out of a puppet theater with the position names where the players were supposed to sit. I can't believe that thing never fell over.
I think Miles being mostly the offensive coach wants to have the top defensive gut there with him on the sidelines, but I don't see how this works -- the DC is the strategist, sees things from above and makes adjustments.
2) Craig Loston taking snaps against UW?
In that case, how about cross training McCray as another Coleman at LS. We've got like 30 players who can play safety and about 4 linebackers. He's had his ups and downs, made some plays, been hard-nosed but McCray is really a linebacker.

i'm not sure where Chavis coached from, but is Tepper really the one you think off? Did you forget Will Muschamp?

That is incorrect. I read an interview with Chavis and he has coached from both the sideline and the booth during his career.

I'm pretty sure Chavis had the choice, and that Miles wouldn't make that choice for his coordinator. It would probably be better to let the defensive coach make his own decision, especially since Miles knows little about defense.

I have seen at least a dozen pictures of Chavis on the Tennessee sideline. I don't know how long he has coached on the sideline, but I know he has done it. I don't think Miles would tell him to coach from the sideline if that is not what he prefers.
And you don't see how a DC can be effective from the sideline? I offer Dick LeBeau, the Steeler DC as an example. He only coached one of the most dominating defenses in recent memory from the sideline last season.

#1) Case-by-case decision. There are probably pros/cons to both.
