IF they put Jim Rice in (he can thank Peter Gammons--the homer) they definitely need to put Dale Murphy in, very comparable numbers, plus the Hall needs a good guy to be put in for once.

No, he really wasn't. Not at their peaks. But it's close. And they should both have gotten in before Rice.

Murphy is better than Jim Rice. I also think he's better than the Hawk. Then again, I think the Hawk is also better than Rice.
Tim Raines before any of them.

Murphy - .265 career batting average.
Rice - .298 career batting average.
Is batting average a sole determination of HOF? No. But, the above is a good start at separating the two.

How many MVP's did the Hawk win? If im not mistaken Dale Murphy won 2 (1982 and 1983)while playing for one of the worst teams in baseball at the time.
Dale Murphy should be IN the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame IMO.

Murphy's OBP: 346
Dawson's OBP: 323
Now, OBP isn't everything, but it is probably the most important stat for evaluating hitters (its a measure of not getting out). Murphy was better at the basic job of hitter than Dawson: not making outs.
It's a good place to start. I'm actually really stunned Murphy isn't in the Hall. When he was playing, I thought he was one of those guys constantly thought of as a Hall of Famer.

Pffffft.
Its just a measure of how many bases you clog up.

My first measure of a HOF is how he did in HIS ERA of playing ball.
It is clear that Murphy is one of the best of his era, the pre-steriod era. Back to back MVPs in 1982 and 1983. 7 time all star, 5 time gold glover, 4 time silver slugger.
Find me a better ball player from 1980 to 1987. They are few and far between.

400 HR's and 300 SB
Barry Bonds
Willie Mays
Andre Dawson
and he won 1 MVP, finished 2nd twice, had 8 Gold Gloves, 8 time all star, and a ROY

He sure as shite took greenies though. He didnt play in the steroid era so thats completely irrelevant. Players should be strictly compared to the era they play in. It's impossible and moronic to compare Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth or Ken Griffey Jr. to Willie Mays.

true redneck, only da Braves exist. Dawson of course just rode the coattails of all those Expo and Cubs dynasties.
No telling how much more Dawson could've done if his knees didnt get ruined on that shitty turf in Montreal either.
still
BA
Dawson .279
Murphy .265
HR
Dawson 438
Murphy 398
SB
Dawson 314
Murphy 161
Gold Gloves
Dawson 8
Murphy 5
All-Stars
Dawson 8
Murphy 7
Murphy had 2 MVPs, Dawson had 1 and won Rookie of the Year
Both had 4 Silver Sluggers
