help needed for wii remote

i purchased a wii for my kids abou a year ago, and needless to say, i'm not into the games like i once was. recently, the remote seemed to stop working. did the obvious thing of changing the batteries. still nothing. so i assumed they just dropped it one too many times and its life had expired. so i got a new remote yesterday and still nothing. the game itself comes on, goes to the main menu screen, and nothing from the remote. i checked all the connections and hookups, and it appears to all be in the same spots from when i initially hooked it up.
any suggestions as to what could be wrong?
thanks

No, you don't. I just bought a wii last week and didn't need a memory chip.
However, the Wii will accept SD memory cards for extra storage space.
You can use the SD memory card from your camera and view your pics on the TV through the Wii console.

Also, if you plan on purchasing a lot of downloadable games off of the Virtual Console and WiiWare services, you'll definitely want to use that SD card space for saving games to. The Wii's internal storage fills up pretty quickly if you've got 5 or 6 N64 games on it.
You can get around this by deleting downloaded games when you're done playing them (you can re-download them for free once you've already purchased them), but that gets to be more of a pain in the arse than just spending some $$ for an SD card.
