Fairly cheap hotel close to Quarter

Planning a trip to N.O. on a Wednesday and Thursday in October. Looking for something within close proximity to all of the good stuff in the Quarter, but not a complete wallet buster, if there is such a place. Any recommendations? Also, what is the best procedure for riding the streetcar down St Charles? Is there like a pass you can buy that is good for a few days or a week?

I live in New Orleans, and what I would suggest to you is you call up a few hotels around the quarter because it is the slowest time of the year, and ask what kind of specials they have. You might get lucky, if not the crown plaza usually is pretty reasonable. In regards to the street car, I would just keep 1.25 handy whenever you want to ride. Have fun

trust me do priceline... I do it everytime I go to new Orleans, 4 star for 50-60 bucks plus tax. I usually either get Marriott (tall one) on canal for quarter... or the jw marriott, rennaissance arts for downtown category.
Never had a problem.... perfect stays everytime, don't throw away your money by booking directly.
If they reject your bid, just change the area to the west bank or an area where there are no 4 star hotels... this allows you to increase your bid without changing anything.

I would think in October that the convention business would start picking back up and room prices will be rising.
Here is a place I have always heard good things about. Locally owned with the owners always there. Free parking. Located in a little bit of a quiter area in the lower end of the French Quarter.

For the full New Orleans experience I suggest the Canal St. Hotel on the corner of Canal and Claiborne.

Well, if you are going halloween weekend, you can forget about a good rate. Also, you don't want to go during the Bayou Classic either.
A no frills hotel in the quarter is St. Louis Hotel. They are supposedly under new management and working on updating the hotel. It's a historic hotel, so don't expect fufi fufiness. Right now, it's mostly used for wedding receptions in their courtyard/restaurant. You could also check into Chateau Sonesta, Monteleone, Iberville Suites, Ramada Inn on Bourbon, Bourbon Orleans, Dauphine Orleans, and Omni....these are better hotels that you can get good rates on sometimes.
St. Ann Marie Antoinette Hotel is an excellent location but barely a two star

We stayed in Maison Dupuy and it was very nice. The courtyard is used a lot for weddings. The rates are very reasonable too.
