Bored, and was thinking about some "best evers". So, here goes . . .

From my memories of players I've actually been around to see (which means barely late '70s to present), and based on the collection that I think would combine to make the best team:

QB: JaMarcus Russell, Tommy Hodson
TB: Kevin Faulk, Dalton Hilliard, Charles Alexander
FB: Tommy Banks, Jacod Hester
WR: Josh Reed, Eric Martin, Wendell Davis, Michael Clayton, Eddie Kennison, Carlos Carson
TE: David LaFleur, Brian Kinchen
OT: Andrew Whitworth, Ralph Norwood, Ciron Black, Lance Smith
OG: Alan Faneca, Eric Andolsek, Herman Johnson, Dwayne Pierce
C: Todd McClure, Ben Wilkerson, Nacho Albergamo

DT: Glenn Dorsey, Anthony MacFarland, Henry Thomas, Leonard Marshall
DE: Marcus Spears, Marquise Hill, Melvin Oliver, Gabe Northern
MLB: Eric Hill, Trev Faulk, Lionel Turner
OLB: Bradie James, Cameron Vaughn
OLB: Michael Brooks, Ali Highsmith
CB: Corey Webster, Cedric Donaldson
CB: Travis Daniels, Tory James
SS: Norman LeJeune, Craig Steltz
FS: LaRon Landry, Chad Jones

P: Chad Kessler, Chris Jackson
PK: David Browndyke, Colt David
KR: Kevin Faulk, Dominick Williams
PR: Skyler Green

Heavily weighted towards recent players, but not just because more recent memories seem better. Fact is that recent LSU Football is the best LSU Football that has ever been (certainly in my lifetime), so it would seem unusual to me if the list weren't disproportiately recent.

But this is just based on my impressions of how I remember the guys playing relative to the competition of their day.

There are some very close calls of course, and some guys I was unsure about position-wise (were Caston and Sancho inside or outside?). The one out of place choice was Hester, who I do not think is the second best Fullback we've had in my time, but would give enough extra versatility behind Banks that I would rather have him than Egloff, Q. Johnson, etc. So this is what I came up with off the top of my head.

Dwayne Bowe should be on the receivers list.
LaRon Laundry and Craig Steltz should have started together. Craig was always better than Jessie Daniels

I know this goes back a bit before your time, but I'd put Bert Jones (QB), and definitely Tommy Casanova (anywhere in the secondary) on that list. Casanova is in the top 2-3 players to ever have played at LSU. I also put Michael Brooks at LB and Billy Cannon at halfback (another top 3 player).

Any list like this has to include B. Jones, Cannon, and Casanova. Good list though.

Is Chad Jones already that high on the list or is this based on his potential?

Also, are you talking about Dominick Davis when referencing Dominick Williams, b/c he was Davis at LSU if so.

That was more of space and role decision than a quality decision. After Reed, Martin, Davis and Clayton, I was looking for some flat out burners to really stretch the field. Kennison and Carson were the best I could remember at that (though I almost put Buster in there).

I'd put Bert Jones (QB)
From what I've seen/heard of him, I think I'd still take Tommy and JaMarcus.

definitely Tommy Casanova (anywhere in the secondary)
If I could include him in "my time", then he'd definitely be on there. Pretty much whereever the hell he wanted to be!

I also put Michael Brooks at LB
Definitely got Brooks (pre-injury) in there.

and Billy Cannon at halfback
Again, if I were going back that far, no argument here. He'd be #2 behind Faulk on my TB list.

This is tough without putting a timeframe on the pool, cuz names like Tittle, Cassanova, and Cannon come up...with other legitimate older-school candidates waiting in the wings.

Based on your list I'd say you're a diehard Tiger fan who's about 40, and your list is a very good starting point for Tiger teams over the past 30 years.

Pre-my time.

Ditto.

This was just of the guys I could remember sitting in Tiger Stadium watching (or watching on TV). So the cutoff is somewhere in the late '70s. No slight whatsoever to the older guys, I just didn't have the privilege of watching them play.

A little of both, but mostly his performance so far. I was thinking of this in terms of who I would pick to put together the most successful team I could think of. After Landry, another great FS was kind of tough between LeBlanc, Marshall and Jones. I went with Jones because he seems (imo) to have a better combination of coverage and tackling skills, and better speed.

Yes, I have no idea how that ended up as Williams because I thought I typed it as Davis. I am aware that he changed his name later, but I don't really ever think of him as anything but Davis.

Good call; approaching 39 in fact.

No, not quite. But I was seriously considering Boutte and Mawae from those dark days.

Your list smacks of greats I grew up watching play...I hit 40 in June!

ETA: I missed this in the original post: "From my memories of players I've actually been around to see (which means barely late '70s to present), and based on the collection that I think would combine to make the best team"...making me master of the blatantly friggin obvious.

Still a solid list...and you included someone most folks leave off of all-time great Tiger lists: Wendell Davis. The Man. What a treat it was watching that guy run routes and catch balls.

Hokie Gajan was at least the equal of, if not better than, either of them. Of course, he also spent much of his time at tailback.

You know, I was really torn about leaving Hokie off the list (he was my favorite player at that age). But if memory serves (and it may well not; Hokie was a pretty long time ago and my attention span was even worse then than it is now), Hester was a bit more effective running the ball in short yardage. I seem to recall Gajan being a good receiver out of the backfield and having good moves as a TB, and I remember him being strong in short yardage; but just not quite as reliable as Hester for the tough 1 or 2 yards. But it would not bother me a bit to swap out the two.

LB was a spot I struggled with. I had a good bit of trouble recalling exactly who played inside and who played outside in my early days. But I always liked Vaughn as a LB, and I thought he did a really good job running the WLB spot in Saban's defense (which, if I were picking a coaching staff, would DEFINITELY be the defense we'd be running). He was no Bradie James or Michael Brooks, but, yeah, I'd have him on my list.
