First of all, I don't think the Saints will let Vilma get away. However, if that were to happen, I believe Mickey Loomis should lose his job. You just can't justify spending draft picks in two drafts to get a guy for one year. Those draft picks represent young guys that could contribute to this team. Also, don't forget that the problem with having to wait until free agency begins only exists because of the trade for Jeremey Shockey, which is a very questionable move at this point as well (in my opinion of course).

Shockey - I blame Payton... that was all him and Loomis just rolled with it.

If Vilma goes to the Bucs, I will almost have lost all faith in Loomis, especially after signing Will Smith and C. Grant to huge contracts and making them 100% un-tradeable.

He should have been fired years ago.

Loomis is just a bean counter not a talent evaluator. Any moves they make he is an overseer to but not the braintrust in deciding on the who part. He is an expert in the how much part. The roster moves have obviously been at the call of the head coach with Payton and Haz.

The Vilma deal was basically for a 3rd. We gave them a 4th in addition last year but we get the Jets 4th this year.

As far as signing him, there are teams (Bucs) that can definitely overpay for him a whole lot more than NOLA can. If they offer significantly more there is only some level the Saints can go to. For any player Brees, Colston, Deuce, Marvin Harrison, it isn't only how good they are. It is how good they are at what price.

If Vilma walks a Keith Brooking or Mike Peterson could fill the gap. Maualuga or Lauranitis enter into the conversation more prominently.

I hope he stays, I have his jersey. If he does though it isn't the end of the world.

I just dont understand how that provision got left in this trade.

Could we not have offered anything else?

It seems highly risky to give up draft picks for a guy with 1 year left on his contract who you basically have to let become a free agent.

Even if we do sign Vilma, we've backed ourselves into a corner where Vilma has ALL the bargaining power and we'll probably have to overpay to get him.

He signed Drew Brees and Randall Gay, and McCray. Then picked up undrafted Pierre Thomas, Lance Moore,Billy Miller, Lake, Charleston, and the two kicker.

Picked Colston, Jahri Evans, Strief, Bushrod, all in late rounds. god Big Sed, Porter, Reggie, as early picks.

Has done a good job over the years with the cap, this year being the exception, primarily due to the big contracts to Brees, Bush, Smith and Grant. But all teams experience these type of problems. Look at the Ravens about to lose two LB's and their Center, and the Cardinals, with a bunch of top players unsiged.

No one is perfect but Mickey has done a great job overall.

You're almost completely right. The choice to keep Smith and Grant, though, were Payton's. Loomis is not a personell man, but rather the negotiator and business man. I personally have no problem with this type of guy as a GM, as long as the scout team is solid. Ours is, so this combination works out fine.

Here's the problem. He has made some bad moves lately. Giving up a 2nd for Shockey was just dumb dumb dumb. But that's not nearly as bad, and I don't know what is, as trading a 3rd and 4th for a player to COME PLAY FOR ONE YEAR!!!! Who the hell puts a clause in a contract that says if you sign the player long-term, then you have to make that 3rd a 2nd? Christ that was dumb. THEN THEY TRADE THEIR SECOND AWAY, ULTIMATELY FUNKING ANY CHANCE THEY HAD AT RESIGNING VILMA NOW WITHOUT COMPETITION.

I wish they would have just negotiated a new contract with him when they signed him, because then we would still be out a second, but have a 3rd and NO SHOCKEY at the moment. We all can dream though :(

Per my crystal meth dealer, Vilma has received a email from the Front Office with the deal in a PDF version.
