IMO FWIW. I don't think we're going to pay him the kind of money he's going to get on the FA market.

Are you one of those that thinks Vilma has some sort of loyalty towards the Saints?

Vilma has been referring to himself as a Saint in the future tense since about week 11. So yeah, he has some loyalty to us.

yes. believe it or not, there are actually people in this world that have some semblance of loyalty. I know this may come as a shock, especially with the way the league is nowadays, but when I see a person such as Randy Moss stay with the Patriots for less money (yes, I was completely shocked), then I have no problem believing a guy like Vilma when he says he wants to stay a Saint. On a character scale, he blows Moss out the country

It's not just about the highest offer. It's money, playing somewhere he wants to play, being on a contender, feeling wanted, not wanting to relocate family for $7.5m a year instead of $6.5m...

I'm telling ya'll we can't afford him...I agree he's a great young player and I hope he stays. I just don't think we'll pay him.

On re-signing linebacker Jon Vilma: "I'm optimistic. He fit well in our locker room and (with) his teammates. I wish there was a handshake agreement (with him), but there isn't. Obviously, it's a business. I know Jonathan and (General Manager) Mickey (Loomis) and his agent (Mitch Frankel) will be talking. Players at this stage of their careers are smart to look at all the factors at this time of the year. It's challenging. The players obviously have options."

These comments from Payton are what I base my thoughts on. I guess it depends on how you interpret it.

The reason Vilma will resign here is because he was caught in a horrible situation with the Jets for 2 years, and he realizes it isn't easy to find a great fit like he did with the Saints.

The Saints are a good team, New Orleans is a relatively cheap place to live (while still being a top 15 cool city in America), and he fits in our defense like peas and carrots.

Besides, it's not like the Saints won't pay him market value.

Yeah, like if you interpret it based on the contingent draft picks revolved around Vilma resigning, this line from Payton is VERY telling

I think Payton's wording would have been very different if he were trying to convince Vilma to stay rather than trying to make sure they don't loose any extra draft picks when they do resign him.

Well, you can think what you want to. There is no way the Saints are going to let Vilma go. I don't care what Payton said in the media, you can bet a deal is already in place and will be signed shortly after free agency starts. You can take it to the bank.
