The girlfriend and I ventured over to Sammy's after the bball game yesterday. We got the grilled alligator as an appetizer (it was extremely chewing and I probably wouldn't order it again..........I find Chimes does a much better job). I ordered the roast beef poboy and the girlfriend got the shrimp poboy, both were solid.

Overall the food didn't WOW me, I know it's bar type food, but it wasn't even close to Dempsey's.

If we go back, what would yall recommend getting?

I have the same problem with Sammys/Georges/Chimes etc....with that said, I know a lot of people LOVE the crawfish at Sammy's.

are you really going to Sammy's and expecting the food to wow you? The place is what it is, a good casual dining spot with a good atmosphere.

Well I went to Dempsey's and the gumbo and French Dip WoWed me for the type of food it was. I don't expect an upscale dining experience but I do expect a good satisfying meal.

Frequenter of Sammy's and I generally regard it as the best all around restaurant in BR. The only thing lacking are the hot waitresses circa 01-05. I don't know what happened there.

Burger/Fries = Check
Crawfish = Check
Catfish Acadiana = Check
Chick Fried Steak = Check
Hot Wings = Very underrated
etc...

But if Sammy's is 5 minutes away... and Dempsey's is 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic... is it THAT much better?

Prepare to duck. Sammy's has a very loyal following on this board.

booga, that's why I asked what I should get. It seemed to me that alot of people on this board frequent the place, so I figured they'd know.

I live in the Jones Creek Area, so Dempsey's is very close, but with Dempsey's and Opie's being closed on Sunday's I figured we'd try Sammy's.

Sammy's WAS an awesome place before they added on to it. The overall quality of the food has dipped, and the quality of the waitresses has fallen off pretty drastically. I'd rather bring my money to Chelsea's or Georges, better food and better atmosphere. I just can't get myself to enjoy sammy's since they added on a few years back.

I have found that Sammy's has become the new chimes.. Overhyped and overrated. You can get many of the same things at Dempsey's for obvious reasons and I prefer the their end product. Food isnt bad but this place gets way too credit for what they put out.

That is an interesting note, I remember when it was just the front bar area and the back "porch" which several people seemed to not realize existed.

Chelsea's dinner deals are a huge value and really good imo. Went Friday night and got a great burger/fries deal for 6.95.

Catman, that was my basic observation after yesterday. I was just wondering if I maybe missed something with the way people hype this place up.

Positive Note: The girlfriend got onion rings with her poboy and they were very good.

I'm looking forward to trying Opie's soon, hopefully it won't be the same as Sammy's was for me.

George's Southside's food has been awful lately. I certainly remember it being pretty good, but not anymore.

Like I said its good food.. I would prefer Opies but I havent been there in a long time though to make a better comparison. I just think the whole Sammy's = best restaurant in BR thing by many people here is rediculous. Its not even close to being on the same level as a Louisiana Lagniappe. (trying to stay in same category) And I could name at least 10 places I would prefer to dine at.

I have a LIFETIME boycott there. Under no circumstance will I ever visit this location of Georges in my life. Not after waiting almost an hour for my food and being told I was lying about how long ago I ordered. (their clock on their order puncher was 20 min off of the clock on their CC machine no less) My entire table was long since finished their food and people that arrived long after me were finished. How fricking long does it take to cook a cheeseburger? There was not even a wait when I ordered it. But when I complained they said I was exaggerating. WHO THE frick tells their customers this?
