Question about cancer insurance policies...

Are those cancer policies that teachers/state employees are offered a ripoff??? My wife wants to take one out, but I haven't gotten to research them very well yet. I think they run about $40 bucks a month. My mother in law recently passed away from cancer so my wife is a little more sensitive about the subject now. Any input would be apprecaited on what I need to look for.

My mother is a teacher in Terrebonne Parish and the cancer policy she had w/ the schoolboard/state helped me when I was diagnosed with cancer at 22 years of age.
Without having the policy in front of my face to read the details, and knowing my annual checkups at MD Anderson alone costs approx. 13K (not including travel, food, hotel, etc.), i say 40 a month isn't that bad.
But it's the chance you take - that's all insurance is.
good luck

AFLAC sells something similar, i bought it, i looked at the benefits and if my father would of had it they would of paid HIM about 150K in his last 2 years, Is it a good deal well it is one of those things you hope to never find out

I forgot about AFLAC. She had that policy also and it transferred to me on my 25th birthday (or when I graduated college or something like that.) As long as i keep up the payments (approx. $80 a quarter) it is now my policy. It helped pay for hotels, plane/travel reimbursement, radiation treatments, etc. I plan on keeping it since I can afford it. I also keep it because nobody will ever sell me health insurance for as long as I live. I looked for two years when I was self employed and could not find anything due to being diagnosed with cancer. As long as I work for someone that has health insurance, I am covered. But if I try to obtain a new policy on my own - it will be so expensive that it would not be worth it - even if someone would write me a policy. And that was pretty much word for word from every insurance company I talked to (about two - four years ago).
It's not something you plan for, and it's a chance you take to buy it, but you'll appreicate it if you need it. Plus - once you're diagnosed your a black mark on every insurance carrier and they won't touch you with a 20 foot pole. I speak from experience.
My advice is, if you can afford it, and if your family history has cancer in it - then buy it. If there is no family history, I would probably roll the dice and not worry.

These are supplemental insurance policies, very different from health insurance, these policies pay you not the doctor or hospital and you can do whatever you want with it. My AFLAC policy will pay 15K upon diagnosis of cancer, then $200/day for each day in hospital, 500 for each chemo treatment, 250 for each MRI, etc etc etc. This money can help with copays, deducatbles, living expenses, beer money, whatever you want to use it for.

I was looking into LTC insurance, but they want $5k a year for that, which I don't think is worth it. My Mom died of cancer and my aunt, but as far as I know, no one else. Both my grandparents had heart trouble, so I am more concerned about that. Anyone have LTC insurance? I am 34 with no health issues, other than allergies and am overweight by 40 pounds.
