What was the deal with Jack Del Rio after Saban left?

Was he interested in the job or not?

The search for a successor to Nick Saban took an unusual twist Friday when ESPN.com learned that LSU officials, in Jacksonville for what they believed was an interview with Jack Del Rio, returned home without meeting the Jaguars coach.
It is unclear if Del Rio had originally agreed to the interview and reneged -- possibly after further considering his contractual situation with the Jaguars -- or if LSU officials misunderstood his intentions.
What is clear, however, sources close to both sides say, is that an interview did not occur.
A contingent of university officials, believed to number between seven and nine, spent much of New Year's Eve afternoon in Jacksonville cooling its heels at a time when the search was said to be heating up. There had been reports early in the week, most of them emanating from LSU sources, that LSU might try to meet with Del Rio sometime Friday.
Last week, ESPN.com reported that the Del Rio camp had been contacted by LSU intermediaries to gauge his interest in the event Saban accepted the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins, which he did Christmas night. How much interest Del Rio has shown in the LSU job, if any, is not known.
The fact Friday's interview did not take place, however, seems to indicate Del Rio did not choose to pursue the job.

But people claim that he wanted the job and Bertman screwed it up

It had something to do with interviewing for the LSU job before the JAX season ended was a violation of his contract. And the rumor was that Bertman was upset when he traveled to Jacksonville only to be told by Del Rio's agent that he couldn't meet, so Skip decided not to wait til after the season to talk to Del Rio (all rumor of course).

Skip botched the proposed interview. Looked like a douche for bringing the whole search crew all the way to Florida so grabbed his fallback yes man Les immediately in spite. Score one for hiring a baseball coach as AD.

6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other. Del Rio is a meathead just like Miles.

Actually they finished '04 at 9-7 and were out of the Wild Card hunt before the last week of the season. Therefore if Skip would have waited til after the weekend Del Rio would have been able to talk, under the terms of his contract with JAX.

just thinking a little bit, how much better off would LSU be with Del Rio instead of Miles, or any better at all? I would think Del Rio would be since he's been pretty successful in the NFL, but who knows? Miles could be alot better than him.

I remember them saying, that all Skip had to do was wait 2 more weeks. He didn't and was pissed because he was turned around in Florida. He then hired Less...I mean Les.

kind of, Del Rio contacted Skip again after Miles already agreed to take the job. Del Rio was in the parking lot but never met with LSU officials because of his agent

Dave Wannstedt is a rocket scientist?
And how has Del Rio fared without Mike Smith?

Les Miles was decided on right before they got to Del Rio. Radio heads such as Jimmy Ott used to scream about this, cause why not just interview him and give him a chance even though Miles was the choice. Hell his nfl team was 12-4 at the time.
