State of LSU's Linebackers - what happened?

The play of LSU's LBs is scary.
This season, Riley, Sheppard, Beckwith and Cutrera have combined for a total of:
1 sack
1 forced fumble
no interceptions
1 fumble recovered
6 passes defensed
6 QB hurries
12 tackles for loss
The leading tackler among the group is Sheppard with 52 tackles.
Last season, Ali Highsmith alone accounted for 9 QB hurries, 1 fumble recovered, 2 forced fumbles, 9 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 8 passes broken up. He had 101 tackes.
After looking at the lack of production from the LBs, it makes me wonder whether our LBs are simply not making plays or if defensive schemes have been changed which create more opportunities for DBs and DL to make plays. . . if defensive schemes have been changed, was this done purposefully by the coaches to counteract the weakness of our LBs or is it a personnel issue because of the emergence of more "spread" type offensive sets?
It seems like LSU offers an opportunity for a good young LB to come here and play early.

We have linebackers?

I see a couple of major issues with the LBs - they are not filling their lanes and making tackles, and they are not getting deep enough drops on passing plays, especially in the middle of the field - this is leaving a huge gap between the MLB and the FS.
Think about how m many TDs have been given up right down the middle of the field.

Linebackers have to be unleashed.
Our ENTIRE defense plays on its heels, all day long.
Coaches have to prepare, prepare, prepare our LBs to not have to think, just get in there and make the play. Now they are busy worrying about formation, alignment, reads...then trying to make the play. The speed of the game is now too fast.
You want them to play better, teach them during practice. Of course I am not too certain our DCs know what they are trying to accomplish.

I agree with this post. It appears the LBs are out of position on passing plays. The middle of the field is wide open. I also have noticed that the better teams (i.e., FL, GA and Bama) created and took advantage of mismatches with our LBs on passing plays.

we have 2 guys from Georgia that UGA didn't even sniff. Minter will be better IMO

They have missed more tackles than they have made.

Of the three - Riley is the best IMO. Beckwith is just not the same player from last year and Sheppard is out of position and lunging at tackles all the time.
Riley also seems to be the only one who can cover a RB out of the backfield.

They have a mule and two possums at the helm.

Kelvin Sheppard has stepped up recently. I knew he had it him. IMO he always looked like the better of the two at Stephenson (Riley/Sheppard).
10 tackles against Bama
17 tackles against Ole Miss

I thought the same thing. Neither Riley nor Sheppard were offered by UGA. I do believe GA produced strong high school LB talent that year. I recall there being some highly-rated recruits from GA.

I can tell you what the problem is. When you take two guys away from their respective coaching positions to focus on making gameplans, not only does the players they previously handled on daily basis regress the other players they are helping coach do to. Go look at LSU sports.net and take a look at the staff.....Nowhere does it say LB coach or Secondary coach. We know that they were primarily responsible for those positions last year and we have struggled bad in those KEY positions all year long.

Just curious.....#22 Baker is a demon on special teams. Why didn't he get a few reps somewhere during the season.
