I think this one was similar to 2010 in that Russian and USA tensions had escalated to almost Nuclear event.
When the ship rises up, the aliens cause a massive tidal wave that could engulf the world.
That may not be correct. I'm going off memory. There were about 26 minutes added to the extended edition that really changed the overall tone of the film.
