Buying a car outside of your home state

I'm thinking of getting a car within the next couple weeks in CA but my license and permanent residence is in LA.
Will this be a problem when it comes time to purchase?
Will I be paying any extra fees? I presume I'd be paying Louisiana sales tax on the purchase?

If by L.A. you mean Los Angeles then you'd be right.
The cars I've been looking at are about 2K to 3K cheaper here and a much better selection.
I'm looking at used so I'd like to have some options.

really, I am surprised. Good luck. How long are you going to keep it out in Cali, might make sense to register it there.

Don't know. I might do that but I don't have a California driver's license. I'll have to research the costs of registering it here vs. there.

When we moved to New York and bought a car after Katrina, we still had an LA license, but since we had a residence we registered in NY, so paid NY sales tax which was cheaper than LA. We were given the option since we still had our LA licenses.

I just bought a car yesterday in New Orleans and I am a Houston resident. Charged me Texas sales tax instead of LA tax. Good deal for me. No extra charges. Second time I have done this.

How did you go about getting it registered with TX?
I might not be in Louisiana for a while. Can they just mail you the plates or something?

You need to have it licensed in L.A., or you'll have trouble if pulled over in a third state. In most states it's illegal to drive with both lic & registration from two other different states.

But I can get it licenses in L.A. by the state of Louisiana though right?
That's the question I really need to have answered.

You're asking if you can buy it in Los Angeles & have it registered in Louisiana? Yes, you should be able to do that. If you live in CA though, you're probably supposed to have it registered there (& have a CA driver's license)... unless you're in school (or a couple other reasons).

Correct, my cousin bought her Jeep on Ebay (went to Texas) to buy it and then registered it in NOLA. She claimed it was a cheaper route to go.

When I lived in Dallas, I bought my vehicle from New Orleans. I don't recall any issues.

In MD, you pay the difference in Sales Tax if you buy it out of state.

Do I actually have to go to Louisiana to get it registered there though?
I don't know how long I'll be out here really

They are; you get a "smog check" instead of a brake tag. But modern cars generally don't have a problem with CA emission standards.

yeah....I was planning on buying used so whatever car I have will already be smogged...

when you register in Louisiana, you will be on the hook for sales tax. Some states have reciprocity where you just pay the difference. If I remember correctly, you will not get a credit if La tax is lower than wherever you bought it. If you want to register in La, most dealers in other states can handle that paperwork and charge you the La sales tax. You might want to call in advance and make sure they have the paperwork as it's probably uncommon for the CA dealer to register in LA. Texas dealers for example are used to it and have the paperwork ready typically.
