I hate the circumstances that had to happen for me to bring this up, but here we are.

Whenever TT, or any decent OOC opponent is mentioned as a possible game, rest assured we will hear one of the following:

"We don't want to risk losing, the SEC slate is tough enough and losing diminishes our NC chances."

"We need cupcakes to work out the kinks and give guys experience."

First off, the odds of going undefeated and/or winning a NC are slim, in ANY year...too many things have to happen. Hell, we haven't gone unbeaten in 50 years with some damned good teams along the way. That said, the goal should be to win the SEC and take your chances with the NC.

Let me pose the question. Would anyone have rather played a team like Texas Tech, who I'm quite certain now would have rung up 50 points on us, exposed our deficiencies and got the coaches working to correct the problems, BEFORE playing a team like UF? Because obviously, whatever kinks there were in the cupcake games weren't enough to get the coaches to recognize them. I'll take an OOC loss against a decent team if it means we're better in conference later. And I've said it 1000 times...it doesn't have to be a top 5 team...although that is fine. Just someone, ANYONE who will provide a test. If you're a true NC contender, you're either going to win or play it close.

I'd like to see the A&M season opener re-established. I know they're bad now, but i'd rather see us pummel the Aggies than App st or UNT. that game had developed into a pretty good rivalry by the time the contract was up.

TT was lucky to beat a crappy Neb team.

Your logic is sound. The problem is getting a team to commit to a "one and done" like Oregon State did a few years ago. Texas Tech would have likely demanded a return game, and that would not sit well with LSU and it's apparent "mandatory 8 home games" per season.

Play a schedule with 6 at home and 6 on the road every other year and you'll get some good OOC action. 8 home games a year gets you North Texas, Troy, Appy State and yeah, Tulane*.

*Tulane technically does get a return game, but LSU is guaranteed more fans at a Tulane home game than Tulane will have there!

The rumor (unsubstantiated) was that LSU wanted a home and Houston agreement. TT told us to piss off and I don't blame them one bit.

No team should have 8 home games. But even with that, if they had not committed to the ridiculous Tulane series, they could do an OOC home and home and STILL have 8 home games every other year.

Most def. Upgrading the schedule is a must. Playing Appy State and N. Texas isn't preparing you for crap. All it does is inflate your ranking and postpone the inevitable. At least one good OOC game would help. Ohio State learned they needed to change QB's and Tressel is the most conservative; stubborn coach in NCAA football.

I think that one good OOC game is a good idea for all SEC teams. With the difficulty of getting through the SEC slate unscathed, it is important to establish the SEC as the toughest conference. If LSU wins that and goes on to win the SEC it makes it hard to keep us out of the discussion for the BCS championship. That being said, I don't like the idea of opening the season with a tough OOC game. Teams having reached their stride and can look far better or far worse than they actually are.

Unfortunately, I think the 8 home games will be a fact of life for a while. Miles new contract definitely pushed the boundary of LSU's budget and the only way to cover the shortfall is with the extra home games. I think the tightness of the budget may also have played a role in the hiring from within of our defensive coordinators...

TT didnt want to come to BR. I think it would have been a great matchup but you cant just start scheduling whoever you want to play. I think the SEC so strong that the coaches rather not have their players get beat up in OOC games.

Doesn't have to be the opener...just some time before the first tough conference game, ala VT last season.

Not buying it. The AD's do the scheduling. Playing three cupcakes before starting SEC play doesn't prepare you for anything. I know a lot of people believe the SEC "beats up on each other" thing, but gauging yourself before conference play helps, not hurts IMO.

I just started a thread without even seeing this one.

You are wise, Obi-Wan.
