i won't say its the best, but i bought my son a savage youth model with scope for about 280 bucks 2 years ago

its a 7mm-08....i think i bought it from budsgunshop

its been a good little rifle, and like i said, it isnt the best build or brand, but its a perfect youth gun IMO

I killed my first deer at 7 with a Remington Model 7 in .243

It's a fantastic gun! Many of my little cousin's used it after me.

I would stay away from the Rossi single shot .243, that thing kicks worse than anything I shoot and my sons hated it.

got little head one from Simmion's with a scope for that with the mail in rebate.

I cut a coil and a half off the spring and it shoots really well.

I won a 8 pt or better deer hunt for little wick at an auction earlier this year. I have not deer hunted in years and debating trying to borrow a gun for the weekend vs buying a gun that will get little use. $300 is awful cheap though...

you can change the stock on the savage axis to a full size, they even give you a coupon for a stock rebate that is good for 5 years.

If he enjoys deer hunting that 7-08 will get plenty of use in future years....

My first was a single shot .243 by New England arms. Short padded stock makes it ideal for a youngster.

That is what I am scared of. I moved away from deer, no real desire to get involved again...

CVA makes a good crack barrel

ETA: the caliber is all personal preference. Everyone will swear by the one they use. I like .243; I don't have much experience with 7mm-08.

I don't think you can go wrong with either
