Anyone familiar with this gun? Wife likes it and is talking about getting it as her first deer rifle. Currently on sale at Cabelas for $399 with an additional $50 rebate

I'm thinking 7mm-08 over 243 for her. I'm not a huge fan of that particular camo but I don't care as long as she likes it

I know nothing about the gun but I would definitely go with the 7-08.

Gun sounds like a good deal.

Yeah and I'm more excited that she's wanting her own rifle.

Go for it brother. And if that's what she wants, you better get it. Might be your chance to get her more in the woods. I know for a fact the .243 will kill em deader than a doornail. I'm not familiar with the 7mm-08 though, so take that how you want.

I'm not familiar w/ that particular gun. From what I can tell from the pic, the safety sure doesn't look like a Winchester M70. The fact that SHE likes it is a BIG vote in it's favor. And yes, I'd vote for the 7-08 instead of the 243. The 7-08 has a very nice balance of performance mixed w/ reasonable recoil. You can even start w/ reduced recoil loads if you want. 7-08 ammo can be hard to find in my local/rural stores (my local Walmart doesn't even stock 7-08) so when you find what the gun likes, buy at least a couple boxes. If possible, she needs to have the chance handle to be sure it fits her and "feels right."

ETA: I've read a few reviews and they seem favorable. A few points:
The action is completely different from the Model 70.
It has a trigger that's meant to be adjusted.
Lots of plastic.
The 2 position safety looks a little oddly placed to me.
It has a 60 deg bolt throw.
It uses larger than usual 8-40 screws to attach the mount. Be aware of that when you mount the scope base.
Accuracy seem acceptable.
It uses a barrel nut to set the headspace, just like Savage (and most newer inexpensive bolt action rifles).

My wife has the XPR .270 and she loves it, not a bad shooting gun!!

But i would definitely go with a .243 or 7MM-08 because her .270 does pack a little punch

I went to the gun show today in Bossier City and saw my first XPR. It felt pretty good and handled well. It does have a barrel nut, but unlike all the others the barrel nut is not notched so it won't a Savage barrel nut wrench. Your Cabela's price is a good bit cheaper than the gun show price.

Went to Cabelas this evening to pick up an online order I had placed earlier this week. Of course we had to check out the gun. Luckily they had one 7mm-08 left in stock. For the price it felt really good and had decent balance. Her face lit up when she held it so I undoubtedly bought it for her. Can't wait to take it to the range with my new Tikka. I need to slow my roll now for a while. I'm at 4 new rifles and scopes in the last 3 weeks

Damn 4 in the last 3 weeks?! Thanks for that. I felt bad buying 6 last year, but now I'm not feeling so bad!

Forever, I'm afraid you're ENTIRELY wrong. You may be on a once in a lifetime roll, keep it going!!! After all, the newest purchase is actually your wife's gun. Congrats! I'm glad she likes it. Update us once you've shot it.
