We had a fella locally that was similar. He picked up odd jobs here and there. His main source of income was scraping metal. Most of it stolen copper from peoples ac units. When the "authorities" went after him with arrest warrants he took to the woods. "Survival" instincts didn't do much to deter the nose of a bloodhound. We found him 30' up a tree bear hugging it like a squirrel
