Over the years I have received different responses from head shooting does. Why is this? I'm pretty sure head shooting and dropping the animal where it stands is the most painless way to harvest a deer. I guess some people are too naive to see this.
What say the OB?

For the record, I'm 100% on all head shots. If I were not capable of this I would not be making these shots.

Nah. Too easy to double lung them and not mess up any meat.

Last second move by nanny and maybe you pop off her jaw. Then she starves.

Until the first time youre just 3" low and blow the deers bottom jaw off letting it live a horrible existence for the next 6 months.

You could pop a jaw off and she could starve to death. I still do it within 100 yards.

Extremely unethical shot. There's very little room for error.

As a finishing shot, sure go ahead. Otherwise, a few inches low could lead to a deer starving to death with the front half of its face shot off. Stick to the neck if you're hell bent on trying bang-flop shots.

Depending on your shooting ability and confidence - I have shot them in the head.

Seems like you have your mind made up already. I will not take nor recommend a head shot as an ethical option for an initial shot on an unwounded deer under any circumstance.

The jaw thing as others have mentioned. Not many worse feelings than to blow a deers jaw off and see it bolt away.

A fellow hunter can disagree w/ you w/o being naive. I'm not a naive hunter, but I don't agree w/ you. I agree w/ the majority of the responses. I have this same discussion w/ a hunting buddy of mine who's basically been like an older brother to me. When given the chance, he prefers to head shoot does while I don't. It's not a matter of how capable you are as a shooter as too many things that you don't have control over can happen, changing a "painless" killing shot to a very painful, slow, lingering death shot. And if you merely wound the doe (as will most likely eventually happen), the deer will most likely escape as you're probably not going to have a blood trail to follow. As someone else already mentioned, if the idea of a shot that'll be fatal and completely incapacitating 100% of the time is important to you, take a neck shot. Works just as well and has more margin for error. In the meantime, I prefer to take, and advocate, double lung/shoulder shots.

ETA: I've got a serious question for you. If the head shot is such a good shot, as long as you're not shooting a buck you're going to mount, why do only does get shot in the head? Why not also head shoot spikes, four points, small 6's, etc?

Thanks for the input guys. I ask the question because I'm trying to make the decision on how to answer this question when my 7 year old son is bound to ask it down the road. I know it's not far from coming up.... Agreed that wounding a deer is the most unethical thing a hunter can ever do and I would never do that. My opinion is if you can't put 3 rounds in a 1" group at 100 yards you shouldn't be hunting. 75% of the head shots I've taken were less than 100 yards. That being said, is it just the gruesome thought of a headshot that makes it unethical-ish..

Over the years of hunting I've learned that not all hunters have spent the time needed setting up and practicing with their hunting rifle to be confident enough and accurate enough to make or take accurate shots.

Long story short, I feel that if a hunter is an accurate shooter it should be acceptable to place his shot where he sees fit without being called unethical. Granted, this hunter should have the reputation of always making his mark and taking good judgment shots.

I only shoot does and mature mountable bucks. I take more pictures in the stand than shots......

I had crosshairs on a does head today. Just practicing steadiness. Thats my buckbait right there.

^^^This. My hunting partner did this last weekend. Deer went right down. He left her for a hour or so. Came back and she jumped up and ran off with jaw flapping in the breeze.

Only time I've ever done a headshot was on a funky spike walking dead away from me at 25 yards. He came out from behind me and once he got into range I whistle and he stoppe and threw his head up looking straight away from me. Put the crosshairs on the back of his head and with the 45-70 it looked about like that yearling in MillerMan's pic.

Deer never knew what hit him, I think that's pretty ethical.

Pop-em right where the neck meets the shoulders. Dead everytime.
