Saturday a buddy and i are fishing a lake in texas. We notice not to far back on a bank there is a kayak tucked away in the woods.

We get to shore and check it out. It's a Pathfinder 14. Has a ghille suit (what folks use for turkey hunting) and stool. There is rain water in it so we know it's been there at least a week. Chained up to the tree.

My buddy says let's take it, turkey hunting is illegal in this park, they deserve it.

We didnt take it, i dont feel right about taking another persons gear. When i got home i told my wife about it. She said i should have brought it home.

what would you do?

Let the Game Wardens deal with it

BUT, "a ghille suit and stool" is not specifically turkey gear

So your wife is OK with stealing someone's stuff?

Leave it. It's not yours. How is this even a question?

Up vote for hat. Seems to best decision for all.

If I left a kayak chained to a tree for whatever reason, and came back it was gone, I would contact the authorities to try to locate it.

No way in hell I'd take another man's stuff.

Well, big stuff anyway. I found a shotgun shell on the ground last year at our camp and kept it.

Still feel bad about it

So your first thought is to steal it and not maybe check around and see if something could have happened to the guy, and at the bare minimum to call the Game Warden for the area and report it.

we checked the area no one around, no body on the ground.

I figured i would get these responses from the outdoor board.

The OT board may have been a little bit more split :)

You don't know the purpose for the kayak and equipment being there so assume it's because of illegal turkey hunting by the owner of the equipment. Therefore that justifies you and your buddy stealing the equipment?? There's no way I can make any sense of that logic. I'm sorry, but whoever thinks that was a good idea, completely missed the concept of respecting other people's property while growing up .

Doesn't necessarily mean he intended to turkey hunt. Is there any legal hunting in that park? If so, maybe he was a hog or deer hunter. Not sure when your deer season ends, but maybe its been left out there since the end of deer season.

Either way, possessing a ghille suit isn't illegal...but stealing someone else's kayak and gear is.

Should've just called it in and reported to the game wardens. For all you know, whoever owns that kayak and gear may have been reported missing weeks ago and hadn't been found yet.

I don't have a strong opinion on this either way, but if you're walking around your hunting property and find a stand you didn't put up, with a wallet laying at the foot of it, you would just leave the stand and give the guy his wallet back?

I'm under the assumption that this was a public area

Big difference...OP mentioned they were fishing in a park. That's public land. Shouldn't mess with other people's shite on public land.

If it was private land and I found someone else's stuff on my land and it wasn't supposed to be there, then I'm taking it and disposing of it how I see fit.

But on public land, I'm not messing with it...and if it looks suspicious, I'll call it in to a warden to let them deal with it

Was probably trying to hide the kayak with the ghillie suit

I would too, but the guy with the stand could have gotten mixed up and thought he was on his property, just like the kayak could have been some dude who plays paintball or some shite. I was just curious about the notion of respecting someone's property even if you are fairly well convinced they're breaking the law.

I would report it and or check to see if there's been any missing persons reports filed. Did you assume that's he's been illegaly turkey hunting in the same spot for a week now?
