What are my best options for planting a tree in the backyard. There's a pretty big wide open space there that I realized today needs a tree. I am open to different options but don't want a shitty looking tree or a gum ball tree. I like oaks and fruit bearing trees but it seems I'm late in the year for planting.

Should be ok but I wouldn't wait any longer though, or u could just wait until next February and know you will be fine. If you live in a subdivision and have a small yard I would go with ornamental pear trees they are white in the spring and deep red in the fall. They dont get as tall or make as much of a mess as a oak.. If you have a big yard get you a oak Sawtooths are fast growing and will be dropping accorns at about 8 to 10 yrs old.. Deer and squirrels love em.. I planted 30 sawtooth oaks and 30 shumards oaks last February.. I will be huniting under my sawtooths in a few years,, but I will probably be dead or dam near it by the time the shumards get old enough to drop. Live oaks are pretty once they reach about 100 years old so if it's a house that you think you will pass on to the kids plant one of them but you need lots of room for it to grow and are costly depending on the size

Do it quickly, you should really wait until the tree is dormant in the winter to plant a new one

I love a fast growing silver maple, but planted this late they would probably act funny.

You can plant a red oak and keep it watered and you should be fine.

I always buy an overly tall nursery tree and top it. Usually, a red oak will go from a 2inch trunk to a 5 inch trunk in under three years for me.
