We usually use milk jugs and chicken livers, throw them out at night and come back in the morning

If you can catch you some bream before you bait yah lines. The bream heads work awesome if your after turtles. Thank me later! Good luck!!

You can build a trap out of 6" PVC pipe and chicken wire. Make a 5x5 foot square out of the PVC and build a fairly good sized box under it out of chicken wire. Put a 2x4 across the top of the square straight over the middle with overhang off each end. Put a board off each end running down into the water. The turtles will walk up on the board, and jump off in the trap. They can't get out.

tie a trot line to two objects and keep it suspended about 2-3 inches above the water. bait with chicken hearts.
Or a piece of meat hanging from a branch (and above the water) with some treble hooks hanging too. While it paddles to get the meat it'll get caught on the treb's. A guy from Pine Prairie told me a cat was very good bait to hang.

Works like a champ and it's cheap. The only problem is that if you let it fill up with turtles, you're gonna have a hell of a task on your hands to get it back out the pond.

Basking turtles, yes. You won't catch narry a snapper though.

Maybe use a 2x8 or something so the bigger turtles want to get on it?

Put one end of the board close to the bank?

We've caught a few with that trap, but it may not be as effective as what yall are suggesting. The only way I've ever caught snappers was to see one on the bank or in a ditch somewhere and grab it.

You want to catch a snapping turtle? Like with your hands?

Screw that.

You're only going to mess up once before you ask yourself "why am I doing this?'

My suggestion is to try to catch the regular painted turtles or something.

Snapping turtle will mess you up if it gets ahold of you.

The OB provided enough beta (and inspiration) in this thread for me to be successful today.
I've never fished for turtles.
Caught one snapping turtle near Geismar, LA.
Trot line to stake on bank. 5 eye hook with chicken gizzards. Got it around sunset.

Thanks guys.

What's the quickest, easiest site to host photo?

Waited until I caught another one for photos.
I think the dark one is a 'loggerhead' snapping turtle and the lighter one is an alligator snapping turtle.

Both tasted divine in the sauce piquant.

I caught both in Ascension Parish, on different days.

*No size limit
*1 turtle per day, per person, per vehicle.

Had to tie the bigger one to the truck. They will climb out of the bed and you'll want to slap yourself.

Caught another loggerhead yesterday and will hopefully catch another one today.

The first two turtles (pictured above) made a decent sized sauce piquant.

I'll post photos of the second pair soon.

Nevertheless, I've read that there are seven types of meat in one turtle.
Can the OB name the types?
