The only time I used the carve cleaner was on my 10/22 that I've never cleaned. Ruined the gray paint on the receiver. Now it has tiger stripes.

I use a synthetic rod and a rod guide for the action. If you're careful, you never touch the sides with anything but the brush and plastic or cloth.

Although I think that might just be a tad o' overkill. I still do it on my high accuracy rifles.
