What do I need to know about night vision before purchasing?

I was in the military and work around various security camera technologies today. So I know the capabilities and what they can do when working. But I also don't want to drop $3k on some crap that breaks after a few months.
My father put this on his wish list and I thought it might be a fun toy for the whole family (star gazing, night hikes, varmint hunts, etc). Here are a couple of types below.
I don't think I like the thermal type for wooded application.

The family would have more use out of a night vision monocular. Thermals are cool but the more practical application is a PVS14.

I have a cheap Armasight OPMOD from optics planet ($379 right now). It's a gen 1 with 3x fixed magnification. Not great, but for whacking varmints inside 100 yards it has worked beautifully.

I used to fix them and the only suggestion I have for you is to call up tnvc and talk to them.
Well, I guess my only suggestion is to get a versatile unit, one that mounts on a gun, helmet, and stand alone. That way you can use it for other things. Gen 3 is the way to go, however some gen 2 units are very solid.

It increases your deer killing percentage drastically.

Thermal has a better application for hunting than night vision imo. If you want the best thermal, go with something like an armasight Zeus or something similar.
