When you buy a used ATV and register it do you have to pay taxes on purchase price? I have looked through the OMV site and if I am reading it right it is treated different than a car/truck/rv in that you only have to pay a $3 registration fee?

You don't have to. IIRC, you need to if you want insurance

It will have to be registered if you ever planning on getting a permit to ride it on management property.

Wildlife Management Area

I've had green jeans stop and talk to me a few times while crawfishing out at Sherburne and they never even asked about why I don't have a registration sticker on mine. I only know of a few people that have registered theirs.

This is from La. DMV website:

quote:

Unless you use your all-terrain vehicle (ATV) solely for agricultural purposes, you must register it with the LA OMV. To register your ATV, bring the title, bill of sale, and proof of insurance to your local Louisiana OMV office. The registration fee is $3 per year for 4 years.

quote:

The LA OMV will send you a reminder notice with renewal instructions shortly before your registration is set to expire.

quote:

Although it's important to register your ATV in a timely fashion, registration does not offer unlimited driving privileges. Regardless of whether or not your ATV is legally registered, you may not operate it in Louisiana's state parks. You are allowed to drive an ATV only on public land and roads that are clearly marked as designated for use by off-highway vehicles.

If you do register it - put as low an amount as possible on the bill of sale. You will be taxed on what you "purchased" it for
