Spinoff from the best caliber for deer. Did some searching and could not find any recent info, just some study done years ago looking at the effectiveness of archery hunts.
Question would be:
Of the deer you have either shot or witnessed shot this year, what was the caliber/broadhead type? About How far was the shot about how far did the animal travel? To make it as scientific as possible no secondhand info only what you witnessed An to make sure y’all baws who are scared of green jeans will participate, all states an “witnessing mutiple people is allowed”
Not trying to make another what caliber is best post with a bunch of comments of “ if you shot that it wouldn’t have happened” but just a true survey of the results!!!
I’ll go first
308 150gr SST ~ 80 yds DTR

This year:
1 3/8” grim reaper 3 blades
9pt buck
Double lung
Shot him at 18yds
He ran ~ 50yds before piling up.
I could have jogged and followed the blood trail it was so visible.

Last year:
.308 165gr Federal Fusions
7pt buck
Heart/lungs
Shot him at 75yds
Took a couple steps and piled up.

On a board with dumb threads, this might be the dumbest.

Killed a couple with a 243 inside of 100yds, good thoracic hit, but they ran about 20-40 yrs before dead.

A few with 270s and a 30-06 between 100 and 200 yds, one or two steps then fell over.

One big baw with a 338 mag at 75 yds, flipped around and dropped dead.

One with 257 wby at 150 yds, dead before hit the ground.

I killed one with my truck once. Good sectional density but BC is pretty low.

Let’s just say that if I was shot with a .243 you would need a tracking dog to find me...

Well if you aren’t asking about bullet placement this question is useless.

So I guess I worded it somewhat incorrect. My thought is that placement is subjective at least on the ones that are lost.
The archery study indicated 18% hit but not recovered in 24hrs.
So far it appears the OB is batting 1000 with various different methods!!
I don’t have data but I believe my overall would be at or about 5% lost
