Tundra and Carfax dilemma

Issue my buddy asked for advice on … I know of a 2021 Tundra just a bit out of warranty. It was a lease return for sale at a dealership. Carfax shows an entry at 5k miles for some simple service, tire rotation or something, then no other entry until the lease was up at nearly 40k miles. I know the OB loves their Tundras. Would you buy this truck, with no evidence of an oil change in its first 40k miles? On one hand it’s very questionable. I’d kinda expect a lease to have service at a dealership, which would be more apt to show up on a carfax. On the other hand, before the advent of carfax, this would’ve never been a concern.

Call the dealership and ask if they have a record of maintenance for that VIN?

Could have changed his oil himself.

Does it have any recalls?
I wouldn't let it worry me regardless.

I wouldn’t worry, it would have had synthetic which goes 12K or a year easily. Although not ideal if that’s original oil….I would NOT be worried.
But still call a dealer and see what they show by running the VIN.

Have your husband check the oil, if that old he'll be able to tell.

Probably got a free first oil change when they bought the car then changed their own oil after that. That’s what I have done on my most recent car.

I have a 2017 tundra that had the oil changed at the dealership the very first time @4500 miles or so. The deal was free oil changes and tire rotations until the warranty expired (3 years 36k miles) my experience was so terrible (including previous vehicles service) I chose to simply pay out of pocket at a mom and pop place down the road. I have taken it to them for oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles since and it has 170k miles now. So on Carfax it would show an oil change at 4500 miles but nothing since.

Politely GFY. I change my own oil. The oil was changed when it was returned off lease. I said that in the op.
I’m trying to get help for a 70 year old friend buying likely the last truck of his life. Last one he bought was 20 years ago. I’ve never bought a used vehicle that wasn’t owned by an acquaintance, so I can’t offer much help.

Carfax doesn't always show the right info. In fact it can be pretty unreliable.

If he's concerned, have a mechanic look it over. If it starts, isn't leaking anything it's probably fine. Bullet proof powertrain

As a Tundra owner, I’d buy it without concern.

If you’re that concerned then pay for a pre purchase inspection at a reputable shop.

Go to Toyota Web Page. Create a login. Add the vin number to your account as your vehicle. It will show you all the maintenance Toyota did.

Unfortunately, he tried that. Upon making this request dealer will not allow it to go for an inspection. Oddly, the salesman said “yeah, I bet we can allow that.” Then the mgr wouldn’t. They said it was a liability issue, but it was another red flag to me. I should’ve mentioned that in the OP but was trying to keep it brief.

Thanks for this rec. So far, I can only get it to show me specs on the vehicle, no maintenance.

quote:I'm walking away from this. Zero reason except they are trying to hide something. If they will give me a warranty (at no additional cost) then maybe but I’d not take it with my local dealer experience.
dealer will not allow it

Thanks for the opinion, even if it bucks the trend.
