Trout and charters in Venice area

Should I expect charters in the Venice area to be targeting both trout and redfish this time of year? The couple I’ve spoken with recently seem to imply they’re only going after redfish. Is this to save on gas? Should I keep looking?

maybe the trout aren't there so guides are going after a species they know they can catch.

Trust me the trout are there right now. All mules too. Fishing has been phenomenal.

I would say 85% of the guides in Venice are exclusive on redfish. They are way more predictable. Closer to the marina. Burn less fuel. Take less time. And use less expensive live bait.
Trout fishing can be feast or famine. And the "tourists" just want guaranteed action. So the charter business has pretty much built itself around the Redfish/Sheepshead fishery.
Lots of times they can be back at the dock by 9 am with happy customers, limits of fish, and burning less than $20 of fuel.
In the fall, with a low river, sometimes they will fish trout when they are close.
It is hard to find guides who will take you trout fishing on the outside this time of year. There are still a few diehards (like the Carter brothers) but they are usually booked up weeks or months in advance.

Thanks. I’ve been out of the game for too long apparently. What you described is the impression I’m getting. Have an 8-year old that’s ready for some catching and mama needs filets!
Is there a better location for trout this time of year? Seems like lodging is an issue in GI.

I do exactly this with my kids (they're teenagers now) and fish for redfish/drum/sheepshead. If I am feeling saucy we may go try to target trout. But the redfish is old school cork fishing. And it is almost guaranteed to be successful. You will end up with a beautiful box of fish and some tasty fillets. And the kid will stay busy all morning.
I actually enjoy the redfish fishing almost as much as the trout. Nothing beats a great trout bite. But it's a gut punch to run 100 miles round trip and end up with three fish.

Absolutely. You can try Dularge at the Reel Inn Lodge, Hopedale/Shell Beach, Delacroix, or even head west and fish with one of the 300 guides at Calcasieu Lake.

Still ain't shite. My boat note (24' bay boat) is $540, fuel to get to the coast and fish is in the $150-$190 range depending on location (2-3hrs) and how much travel on the water. Bait and launch is another $30, add another $20 for terminal tackle and plastic baits that inevitably will get lost. Not to mention you are using your own equipment and are responsible for repairs and replacement. So if I go fishing 1 day per month I will be paying $750-$800 in fishing expenses IF NOTHING GOES WRONG which often happens. Every trip after will cost another $200-$250.
Charters are definitely worth it for most people. Unless you live right on the coast, then a boat makes more sense. But for guys like me, the adventure of finding the fish, exploring more and new areas, and getting to flaunt my full ice chest to the locals at the marina is why I love having. Also the freedom of being on the edge of the earth with almost no rules going wherever you please is so freeing.

They are all that expensive now. You can't find a charter for less than $500 anywhere in the Louisiana Gulf coast.

Yeah, but $500 here in MS to catch a LA limit of trout vs $750 to catch redfish in Venice is crazy to me.

Yea no doubt it’s crazy people spend that kind of money to go catch a couple redfish. Contact Reel Shot charters down there they’ll put you on mule trout.

Fished with the Brent Roy’s guide June 8th. He only wanted to go after reds. We ran out of the 100 live shrimp at 10:30. We only fished 2 spots. He says y’all ready to head in or keep picking at them. Reel shot was on the radio with us all day they caught 3 redfish. Their Facebook page showed a load of trout that he did not catch that day. They didn’t say they caught them that day but sure put up old pics like they did. We were on a commercial trip and told the dude we could all fish and he didn’t even try. You better get a clarification before you drop $800 on a charter that doesn’t include water or fish cleaning.

Ol Brent still struggling with his customer service skills? Between that and his ADHD, that’s a tough day. Been there. I don’t think anyone in Venice is catching trout like the glory days when even I could load the boat most trips. Redfish are more reliable, and give some dude from Nebraska a 40” bull red on light spinning tackle and he’ll book again next year, especially if you aren’t a complete schmuck.

We used Rivers End Outfitters last November and were quite pleased with them. They’re at Venice Marina.
