That looks like a common paw-paw (Asimina triloba), not to be confused with the pow pow and pew pew normally on the OB. Caney Lake is in the southern range of this tree. I have several large trees on my place by the river.

Main difference is the veins in paw paw are very pronounced. That is very obvious on paw paw, and as soon as I see it, I know what it is. Other than that, the lower leaf surface on paw paw is not silver, twigs are oriented differently, basic form is different, bark is different, fruit is different, etc.

IIRC, paw paw smells like pepper jelly and a sweet bay smells more like a magnolia.

Caney Lake is a small lake north of Minden, with real pretty trails. Lake Bistineau is southwest of Minden, and not considered to be in Minden.

Lake Claiborne is right there by Homer, Caney is still North East of there closer to Bernice.

Oh, and I thought the tree in the OP was a Hickory at first glance.

Caney Lakes (Upper and Lower) are located outside of Minden. Caney Lake (or Caney Creek Lake to some) is in Jackson Parish outside of Chatam.

And definitely a sweetbay. The silvery back side gives it away.

the live oaks on campus look like the live oaks in very southeast LA on the salt marsh levees, which look exactly like the scrubby oaks in central tx. there's no way those are the same species but they all look the same to me.
They are.

I find oaks(in La.) to be very easy. Young specimens in the water/laurel/willow can be tough, but other than that, it's simple.
