I have a 1/2 lab 1/2 golden, 1.5 years old. The individual I got her from said that he thought she was gun shy and he had an opp to get a grand champion dog - I had just lost my 18 yo heeler and was looking for a new dog so it worked out. Have been working with her on obedience and retrieves for the most part. She retrieves dummy's and loves the water but we still have some work to do regarding the heal etc. Got some teal wings and let her play with them just to get used to the different texture - I would throw them and then send her and for the first 5 or 6 times she did great. Then she started to pick them up and crunch them. I plan to tape them to the dummy this evening but have any of you guys experienced this and what is remedy? Don't want her eating the ducks before they get back to the blind.

TIA

Has she been force fetched? How have you been correcting poor behavior in obedience and from a distance?

No force fetch training to my knowledge. Have not really been working from a distance other then straight up retrieve. Used a leader early to get her bringing back but not needed now. Regarding bad behavior near me it has been normal correcting. No shock collar although I think that may be something I need to invest in. Not opposed to some professional training as well just don't have one locally that I know and trust (Baton Rouge Area). Will start asking other friends I have with duck dogs about that. Don't think she will be ready this year but I may take her on a few hunts to get used to all of the other aspects of the hunt if opp allows.

Rubber band the wing to a dummy. I have been doing this to my 7 month old lab. Actually took him teal hunting twice and he picked up 16 out of 20 teal. A few fell too far for me to send him.

He did not damage any ducks. Does your dog appear to bite down on the dummy?

Electrical tape will hold em on dummf from my experience. Wouldnt use just wing on its own, it feels like just a toy to em. Careful cuz my 9 mos old will want to go after the dummys with wings and leave the ones without when i send him to a pile. U can also buy liquid scent to help with scent training. He did pick up 30 birds opening weekend.

Thanks for the information all

Coot - nice looking pup! Wish I was more prepared for this season but lost a lot of training time working out of town this summer.

not really - pretty soft mouth; at least with a dummy. No retrieve on actual downed birds yet though.

If it gets worse tape a wing to a wire brush and throw that a few times he will learn real quick not to bite down too hard. I would rather have a dog that sticks than one that won't pick up a duck.

Also before you ask yes I am serious about the wire brush.

I have heard of the wire brush trick. I would try that should things get worse. Also, try the hold command while your dog is at heel. Do this with a bumper then transition to a dead bird (make sure not to use frozen birds, let bird thaw). The hold command can be very useful in teaching dogs not to chew on birds.
