Is there a worse feeling for someone shooting their first buck and not finding it?

Someone in our club shot his first buck tonight. We tracked it for nearly 200 yards in some thick shite. We would find a drop of blood then go 30 yards and not see a drop. Keep crawling and find another drop the size of a pencil eraser. Finally, we jumped him up and he ran off looking like he was perfectly fine. Wondering what the chances are this buck makes it...I know the guy is pretty upset about it. Hopefully the guy will make it through whatever injury he does have

We tracked a buck last week for 4 hrs and went maybe 300 yds with barely finding any blood. Went back 2 days later and found him 30 yds from where we stopped tracking. He died from that wound even though we didn't think he was hit good. Try again in the morning, hopefully you find him

Probably a gut shot, Go back at day time & probably find him not far from where you jumped him. Maybe even still alive so work slow & keep a look out

On another note I shot one this year & found a shite load of hair & one drop of blood, He was back on camera a few days later & I still don't know what happened

Head back and fix a drink with someone you trust. You'll find him

what do yall think the chances are of recovery? I know its hard for yall to say without knowing what kind of shot was made but we found 3 spots where he had bedded down with nice spots of blood there. Finally, after a while of tracking we got within 15 ft of him not knowing and he jumped up running fine. At that point, we decided maybe we had pushed him too much and we needed to back out. Maybe we can get in there in the morning and see if he laid up and died

That sounds like a gut shot. They won't travel far without laying down when gut shot. You stand a good chance of finding him but like I said move slow & keep a lookout while tracking

Call someone with a dog if you can. If not, get you some orange flagging tape and flag every drop of sign you see to help stay on his trail.

Without a dog, y'all should of backed off at that point and waited till morning. If he was bedding down, he is hit bad enough that he will not make it. Never push a deer unless you have a good tracking dog.

Always get a dog if possible. A person will jump a deer but a dog will just bay it up and you can almost walk up there and cut their throat.

Sounds like the deer will die. Wait till after morning hunt and try again

When having bad blood like that I think a good rule of thumb especially when it's this cold is to back out and let them sit. Letting a hit deer sit for longer can only help unless it's hot. Gut shot deer sometimes need to sit 3-4 hours or more to pass on. The more you jump them the more the guts tend to clog the hole and you loose your blood.

THat being said I hope you all find him, but always wait longer than you think unless you are 100% it's a solid hit.

I'd say he's down, don't give up yet. I have that problem with my 7 mag. If I don't DRT them or shoulder hit them then its a very little blood trail.

Hope you don't have the same problem we have at our place though. Last week we had to come back the next morning to find an 11 pt. All that was left was the antlers and head, Yogi and his bear brothers got him good.

How long did y'all wait before tracking him?

If you kept jumping him, you should have backed out and gone in the next day. Especially if it was a nice buck

I'd bring my dog if you were close, but you are going to have to change your user name. My dog is a lady and wouldn't work for a disrespectful woman-beater.

Lol tenfoe. Kr and I both asked where he's at but no response. I'd bring my as well if he's close. So much easier with a dog and tracking collar.

We lost my son's buck this year because he talked me into getting down and going to look for it. I knew it was hit very good but it had just finished raining and the blood trail was very hard to follow in wet pine straw. It taught him a lesson to be patient and give them time. If we had waited it would have died 10yds from where he shot it.

So the motto is don't push them if it's a long blood trail go back in minimum 2 hours to look for it. If you can leave it over night.
