When I see someone 40+ using tobacco I wonder if they just figure it's too late to stop now and they just are going to role the dice.

I'm 40 and quit dipping 2 weeks ago. It's very tough. I still want it every day. I hope it gets better.

By 14, I mean I am actually dipping and buying that shite. I had my first dip at 11 or 12.

For those wanting to quit here is a little perspective.

Nicotine has been shown to be as addictive as heroin

On average each dip has 6 times the amount of nicotine as a single cig

Most successful quitters have attmepted quitting 4 times previously

Arranging for accountability with a hard stop date and supportive family and friends who will check in on your success has been shown to improve efforts at quiting as much as 23%

Of the medicinal options to help you quit, Wellbutrin (an atypical antidepressant) has been shown to be beneficial but should not be used by those with a seizure history. Chantix however, has been shown to be the most effective drug but requires that you do not drink while using the drug. Most peersons using Chantix report increased frequency and clarity of vivid dreams.

Chantix will work for smokers and dippers and does so by blocking the nicotinic receptors. It effectively prevents your body from using the nicotine in your system and thus takes away any of the perceived good feelings from the nicotine.

For all those wanting to quit, I commend you and encourage you to find what works for you.. Don't give up despite set backs or temporary failures.

I started when I was about 12 or 13. I'm 32 now and this August will be 2 years since I've quit. Want one everyday too. One side effect to quitting was weight gain. I've probably added a good 20 lbs since then. When I quit I was going through almost 2 cans a day.

I quit last September. I didnt want to but I knew that I needed to. I chose to quit right after my last knee surgery. On one hand, I was laid up all the time wanting to dip but on the other, all of my habits (dipping while driving, dipping while taking a big post meal poop, etc) were gone because I was forced to stay on the sofa. Its been 6 months and I still have cravings.

My dad has been smoking since he was 15 years old. He is 54 now and still smokes up to 2 packs a day. I never have asked him to quit nor do I expect him to quit. He enjoys it and the damage is done. I would rather him die happy than to be miserable for any amount of time. Not sure if this is right or not but its how I feel.

I've dipped every day since 16 (will be 37 in May) and I wish I could go back and kicked my 16 year old arse. What makes it rough is my occupation as a PE teacher/Coach. All my students/players know that I dip because hollering and screaming at players during the fall just ain't right unless grains of Copenhagen are bouncing off of their face masks. Growing up in a country town, rodeo, family members that chewed, other "good ol' boys" made the dangers of tobacco use pale in comparison to the dangers. I warn all of my students against it but use the do as I say, not as I do approach. I know it's hypocritical, but to hell with it. I'll find a way to put it down some day. I'm just not motivated enough. I kinda like being a dipper, in a way.

None of my family ever did any form of tobacco. Hell my dads side hardly drinks even. So I never picked it up besides a few cigars a year.
