Wanting to get this for my little brother who is 11, he is pretty good with his 4-10 and 22. I want to get something where he can shoot open sights first to get ajusted to the rifle.

My younger brother learned on a 6.8 AR. First with just irons, then with a scope. Simple gun, low recoil, and it does bad things to deer and hogs.

This is just my opinion but when my little girl gets a little older and gets out the BB gun age group, I'm going to get her a 22 with open sights and then put a scope on the 22 to adjust her to a scope on a firearm with very little to no recoil and then get her a deer rifle with a scope on it when she's ready to deer hunt. Im personally not a fan of an open sight deer rifle because it leaves more room for error. Just my take on it. But a 7mm-08, especially with reduced recoil rounds is a good youth gun.

The reviews say you pretty much bought the greatest all around rifle ever & it would be a great gift for a younger brother.

That is exactly what I did with him. I think learning to shoot your gun without a scope at that age makes them feel more comfortable.

That'll work.

The stock may be too long depending on how big of a kid he is, so make sure to check that. A gun that is too long is not fun to shoot.

My 9 yo shot a doe at well over 100 yards with a Savage 708. Easy for kids to handle and got enough pop with the 140 gr boolits to drop them.

Just bought that exact gun Saturday for my son. I did have a scope mounted on it, but did major research before the purchase. Haven't shot it yet because the wife wants it to be a Christmas gift. Great reviews and advice from a trusted friend who has the 243 for his son.

I borrowed that exact rifle from a buddy of mine because I left my bullets at the house. It was his sons gun who was 9 at the time. It poked a hole right through a doe. Worked for me and seemed like a solid gun.

for 180 bucks not sure what the downside could be
if the kid doesn't like it stick it in the safe or trade it

CVA is a good gun, but 7-08 will last him a lifetime, better to spend a little more and get more than a single shot. Savage package guns are on sale right now and come with a decent scope.

If you buy the gun, make sure he practices easing the hammer back from a cocked position.

You would want him to be proficient doing this before setting him in a stand, even if an adult were present.

I spent the extra money and got my son a remington Model seven youth then when he outgrew the stock I bought an adult size stock for his gun. Several companies make bolt action models that are available in both adult and youth models where you could do the same. A 7mm-08 is a caliber he'd never outgrow.

I bought this gun in stainless for my 6 yr old in 7mm-08. I put a 3x9 pro staff on it and got some managed recoil ammo. He can hit the target at 50 yds with it. Weve gone a couple times and I let him bring it but leave it unloaded. I'm trying to get him used to handling it before I put pressure on him to make a shot.

A lot of people start on crack barrel guns, I personally think it is much more difficult for a kid with small hands and limited dexterity to operate a hammer style safety, and probably not the best choice for a young kid.
