Out of curiosity. I started researching what roto-molding actually is.

I found these vids...

Cooler coming out of oven

Cooler coming out of mold

I also saw one making ceramic grills this way.

So, they just design a mold, put in plastic or ceramic, and rotate it in an oven to liquify and evenly disperse the material?

Is that's it?

I thought it sat on the rotary thing and moved via some computer design program to allow a stationary drill of some type to carve out the shape. I was way off...

At one time in my life I was in the business of building molds for the tanks you see on tractors and farms. Back in the day Poly processing in Monroe did the tanks for Ouachita Fertilizer.

And to be clear when I say I was in the business I mean I was a dumb arse kid working in a Fab shop that built the molds. My job amounted to running a 6" grinder for hours on end. It really sucked but I learned a few things.

As far as what I thought it was all about...

Guy in that first video just ducks his head and casually walks beneath those spinning molds. Good thing they are in China because I don't think OSHA would like that one bit.

It's actually a pretty simple process, the major hurdle in roto molding is the design phase, making sure you have the proper radii for filling, tool ports, cooling jigs, etc... if you ever wondered why yeti is more expensive than K2, RTIC, it's because they have more material used during their roto molding process, creating more cycle time, reducing production rates, andddd making you pay more

Anyone have a link to a video making a roto-molded kayak? That machine must be HUGE.

While that may be, the cost is negligible in comparison to the pricing difference.

Yeti's cost more simply because of branding/marketing and product placement. They are a premium cooler and priced it at a rate for a perceived value based upon their marketing campaigns.
