Anyone ever read this book? About to spend a week at the beach and thought this looked like an interesting book to read.

Fascinating and a great read. I remember hearing about last island for the first time on here about a year ago and started researching it. Really interesting piece of LA history and when you think of the expectations people had for the place including the big hotel they were going to build.

I can't imagine what the Island looked like when they had the hotel in the 1800's
Now it is nothing more than a couple hundred yard wide strip that will soon be a sand bar.

There was a small hotel there before the hurricane. There was a larger hotel, the Tradewinds that was being planned to be built. Hard to imagine something like this being built out there but I guess it was that lively of a place

This is the only picture i have ever been able to find. I believe it was posted on an old pictures thread on TD a while back.

They never built the big hotel..................
I liked reading bout the journey it took to get there.
Trains, ferrys, boats, steamships.
Now we run there in 30 mins

yeah but they actually had navigable, defined bayous back then. Lots more land. Can you imagine riding the ferry through the Oak bayous?

last Isle when the statue was there circa 2012

When i was a kid they still had rodeos at that wharf and had a few bayous still inside the island with land camps and houseboats. My dad's generation remembers the sand dunes and taking jeeps to get to the surf. Amazing how much it has changed in the last 50 or so years.

Crazy I've never noticed that creepy thing.

They moved it to across from the ice house by the harbor light near the end of bayou Petit Caillou. They even had a mass on the beach back in the day when it was brought out there in the 50's or early 60's. It was originally on the edge of whiskey pass then it was moved to California canal later. And finally to where it is now a few years ago.

Nah, probably just too busy ripping lips that I haven't had time to check it out.

Saw this one the other day and it claims to be Last Isle.

You know that's last Isle. You called me over to fish right there one day.

Good book, but you don't want to read it while on the beach during Hurricane Season

Why? Its not like a hurricane is going to come out of nowhere and catch you off guard.
I think our hurricane prediction methods are just a litttttle bit better now than the 1800's
