How bout this one?

We went from shooting by inside spread to shooting by body weight; 170 lbs. To me, that’s the best way to insure you’re shooting grown deer. We were shooting some 2.5 year old 140 lb 15inch wide bucks; and letting deer like the one above walk.

Cull is the biggest BS term in deer hunting. As soon as I hear it I know that person has done very little to educate themselves about deer.

You have more downvotes than anything right now, and I will as well, but this is spot on. And the best part is there isn't one thing any single one of them can present to refute this. Every bit of data and research, as well an anacdotal evidence proves your statement.

And age is the only factor that can be controlled by any hunter.

That's all about yearlings. Yearlings are never culls.

Best management is age

That's an old deer.

But don't shoot him because of his genetics unless you know what he was last year. He could have been a fine one a few years ago. And even if he has looked like that his entire life. He skeeted up in a bunch of does in his days already and spread his genes.

I didn't say they were. But it lends credence to the argument that culls exist when a study shows that a small rack on a yearling results in a small racked mature buck, which is what I often hear referred to as a "cull buck".

Why? It cites a 2014 study on deer antler growth, which showed that small antlered bucks remain small. Should you shoot a yearling just because he's a spike? No. But if he's still small at 3.5, pretty safe bet he's not going to get big.

Hell, they tracked those deer from yearling to age 5 in that 2014 study.

The argument being made here is that every study proves that there is no such thing as a cull buck. I'd say that statement is wrong, and that article cites multiple studies that go against that statement.

I can remember being a kid and the general consensus among “outdoorsmen” being shoot all the spikes to keep them from breeding.

Before you get critical of him, th fact that you posted pictures of perfectly good deer which had velvet injuries and called them cull bucks hurts your credibility as well.

shite, I still know people that do that. There will always be people that do that. You'll never convince everyone that that spike could grow into a big deer. Not would, but could.

Their antlers never fully develop until their skeletal structure has finished growing (after 3 years)
