Isn't a pan for water leakage, if installed in an attic? I think the 18" stand is to prevent a possible explosion. Natural gas is denser/heavier than ambient air. A raised tank minimizes the chance of any accumulated gas sparking off.

either way...I'm good...if you hear of an explosion Saturday off Jefferson and Bluebonnet...it's possibly me...
I'm actually pretty good at this kind of stuff...just getting lazy...usually the lazy kicks in when I think I've got everything caught up for hunting season and this kind of stuff shows up....

Feh, almost nobody does that. They'll space them off the floor then enclose them in a closet and defeat the purpose anyway. Modern gas water heaters can detect a rich fuel mixture (from a leak) and shut off.

Thanks for all the info! All done with new plumbing and cut off valves...Saved a chunk of change...Thanks to Fish and the rest for the encouragement...

No such thing as a hot water heater. Its a water heater, gas or electric.
