That's ok IMO. All the coonasses go up there and kill does and all their yearlings and don't report all of them. Those woods are depleted of a deer population and the more hunters that are discouraged to go blast everything in sight, the more deer I should see in years to come (I'm not calling you a coonass or accusing you of blasting everything)

Consensus on lottery hunts is if its brown its down. I don't think many people would be dissappointed if they put a forked or 3 on one side requirement in refuge wide. If they allow all the young bucks to get blasted 2x a year, there will never be any quality ones. They also need to cut back on the # of slots in each hunt for a year or skip one of the hunts one year. But as stated earlier, the feds would rather have bear than deer, and where there are bears, deer don't hang around.

I hunted Africa Hunting Club before the fed's bought the place. Management was nonexistent in those days and it was a rare hunt to not see a buck.
I pretty much got 5 or 6 bucks a year.

After the feds bought the area. A friend & I applied for the first lottery hunt and got a permit. This was around 82' or 83'. We drove the 60 miles, parked @ Africa Lake, put a boat in and crossed to hunt the other side. We both took good bucks and saw several more in two days.

Believe me. The fed's have fricked it up and there are NOT as many deer as there used to be.

Oh I know. My family farms a bunch of land in hunters bend. My uncles said it wasn't nothing to see 2/300 deer in the field on a given night. Now you might see 1 forked horn buck but the deer were everywhere.
It needs to be about half way between what it is now and what it was in '82. Some beautiful woods but the people hunting it, generally don't have any respect for the deer.

I had a bow camp at Tensas.. Did the gun lottery thing 1 time... 1 time was enough... Life is too short, and it was almost shortened a few times that day..

I have a section of about 1000 acres that can only be accessed by boat when the river is up. There is an 8 mile 4wheeler trail that floods about 4miles up and we're at the end of it. Leaves a pretty nice area of secluded hunting. I cross the river in a boat to get to it.

Probably off topic, but I wish LA would go to a antler restriction statewide and cut in half the # of deer you can kill total. LA has the habitat to grow big healthy deer, espically on trnwr.

I agree. frick the gun hunt. If they have a lottery, it should be on black bear. And everybody should get 2 does and 2bucks. They should also make the restriction be on width of the horns. Like 16" or better. Point restrictions just make hunters let 4 and 5 point 2/12 year old deer walk and kill the 2 1/2 year old 8 points, leading to bad genetics in deer herds

I agree with ya but it ain't gonna happen and its sad. It COULD be a big time trophy buck area. Nimrods, Yahoos, and the Feds have and will continue to abuse a beautiful bottom land hardwood forest.

The Turkey population has suffered as well.

It's a damn shame that the common hunter that knows that area, have better views and ideas on conservation than the ones paid to do it. But I guess I'm assuming our views are the right ones. They obviously don't think the conservation and preservation of game is as important as that of predators. Kind of fricked up

Another thing regarding the "refuge". Don't eat a blackberry, put an acorn in your pocket or Lord forbid, kill the Canebrake that just bit you. If you do, you will get a ticket or go to jail.

also regarding the refuge, the ridicous ampunt of paperwork required. On the lottery hunt this past weekend, I had my drivers license, lifetime hunting license, state deer tags, reguge permit, ottery permit, and hunters safety card. And I probably forgot something.

Hold up on the antler restrictions, those of us in Southwest Louisiana do good to see one deer a year. Our deer are incredibly nocturnal. If you put antler restrictions statewide then it wouldn't be worth the effort down here. Maybe antler restrictions north of Alexandria and East of the Atchafalya Basin would work but it would kill hunting down south.

I mix feelings about the antler restrictions. The restrictions could grow bigger deer and it could also hurt the genetics. The 4-6 year old spike, 4pt, 5 pt would not be shot.

When I get my own club or become a board member in the one I am in. I will lobby for hunters to bring in there trail pics and allow them to take a cull buck. If the board feels it is indeed a cull and needs to be taken out the herd the members can take him.

That's understandable. I also think you should get one cull buck a year on public land, along with horn restriction. If a game warden pulls you over with a 280 lbs 5 point that's obviously 4 1/2 and you have your cull buck tag, you're good

102362, I don't dispute what you are saying about mature deer with smaller racks getting to walk. Mine and others suggestion about antler restrictions is hopefully an improvement over doing nothing.
