Don't know anything about the x37, but my friend I hunt with has an older 36hp pro-drive. He wouldn't trade that motor for anything with what we use it for. After owning his boat for 7 yrs roughly he hasn't gotten in a situation he couldn't get out of. He has pulled out a hand full of other surface drives.

If you never ever want to get stuck. Absolutely the best possible choice. Nothing. Compares the the full power reverse. Yeah it does have its downsides, the reverse is slower to get into, the motor seems to be a little slower than gator tails.

But damn put that bitch in reverse and let her eat, We have had ours since the year after Katrina and it is still amazing. The automatic trim and automatic reverse would be nice but mine is the original without it. Wish I had the efi system they come with now.

Full power reverse is cool and all but the instant reverse on the Gatortail is way more convenient, unless you just really enjoy tearing up the marsh and need full power to get off of the land.

If you're gonna fish out of it, instant reverse is the only way to go IMO. I can slow the boat down, get in tight ponds without having turn the lower unit around and it's a little quiter than the pro drive which helps. Bow fishing is also easier to maneuver around.

I had one for a few years. I was never a brand loyal human when it came to surface drives, but they're great motors. Slower than other brands, but the full power reverse is awesome. The speed difference amongst the brands is negligible (stock). I got mine stuck once.

Pro Drive's customer service is also second to none. I bent my prop shaft on concrete last year during the flood in Ascension. Pro Drive sent me a new prop shaft for free, plus some other gear. You can always get KP on the phone.

I don't miss how slow it was, but I have that complaint about all surface drives. I replaced mine with a 60 tiller Yamaha with a jackplate. I didn't have a choice, as my current lease situation doesn't allow for the use of surface drives, but I wouldn't go back. The load carrying ability, torque, and speed of an outboard just can't be matched by a surface drive. That said, I really miss never having to worry about getting stuck. If I needed another for whatever reason, I'd have zero hesitation whatsoever about buying Pro Drive.

Never owned a Gator Tail, but I'm sure they're largely the same way.

Yeah instant reverse is convenient but it's just that a convenience. If your talking about hunting low winter month water and the water drops out on you and your decoys are floating sidewAys there is nothing better than full power reverse. No ifs ands or buts. And I love nothing more than a low water hunt

I hunt late winter marsh with no water and have never needed full power reverse just sayin. I think guys with it get into those situations because they know they can get out. You shouldn't need to run 6000rpms in reverse to get out of a duck pond. The instant reverse is no slouch

eta: I agree with Bluemoons about the speed. That's one of the reasons I don't really care for them and would, like he, prefer an outboard with a jackplate. I'm really curious to see how the EFI's and the new GatorTail XD runs.

Yes yes you do when you are picking up decoys in the middle of a pond with absolutely no water. Yeah you can do just about anything on plane. Especialy with how big and heavy my boat is there is absolutely no doubt any other motor and I would have been waiting for ride to come back up.

And you've already admitted that the prodrive will get you out of more. My statement stands if you want to get out of absolutely anything prodrive.

Plus the automatic reverse takes less than three or four seconds to engage. It sounds like a small trade off to me

yes I do what? need to run max RPM to get out of a duck hole? Up until a decade ago, nobody was doing this, which is my point. If you're in that situation, you're looking for it.

Yeah a decade ago I wouldn't get to hunt the second half of the second split. Now I can.

Or the hunts would be cut short so you can get out. Now we can hunt until the birds stop flying.

My point is that EVERYTHING is easier with instant reverse, other than maybe getting out of a late season mud flat. Frogging, fishing, bow fishing, timber, etc. The pros outweigh the cons by a lot.

They're both great motors by great companies, but if someone asks me, I'm saying GT 10/10 times without blinking an eye.

I do none of that out of my duck boat. And my duck boat has one job. To let me hunt ducks for as long as and wherever I want.

And your telling me if You can't wait three seconds to put the boat into reverse? It isn't a big deal. You know what does suck? Buying a motor so you won't get stuck anymore and having to baby where you go cuz you might get stuck. Or getting stuck and waiting hours.

Because I have a bay boat that I can do all of my fishing from. I have frogged and won small tournaments out of my prodrive but do not do it all the time. No interest in bowdishing but so no reason why the prodrive wouldn't don't just as good too.

In 300hrs I've never experience any of these scenarios. Lets just agree to disagree. We're both brand loyal. I prefer the convenience in every single situation.

There are situations where the GTR is better in the mud than the FPR. There is a video on MMT somewhere of a guy going back and fourth with a GTR in front of a guy working his arse off with an FPR.

I have a mudbuddy but would take a GT over the PD any day of the week.

My hunting is in North LA off the Ouachita and I'm not going to be running across tidal mud flats but I will be in way less than knee deep water.
