Think about a 78-79 or 80-86 with the ecoboost under the hood

Just looked at used Ecoboost motors, and you should be able to get one for under $4k. That is a chunk of change, and you would have to get the tranny with that too.

I saw a Bronco like the OP at a car show a while back. Gunmetal paint, black flares, Line-x interior, regular old bucket seats, no top, and 35s. Made me count my change jar

Sounds like this could be a good fix for your problems.

My dad has one and it is a pretty nice motor. Doesn't get as good a fuel mileage as me on the highway and I drive 5-15mph higher than him. Never had any problems with it at all. Doesn't really have any turbo lag at all either

i told him specifically something that gets 25 in the city, and still can have power

honestly though, 20 in the city would have me jumping with joy

Gearing would be the key to that. Tranny, rear end, transfer case all have to be set up right to match the motor

UPDATE

Just got an Email from Brian:

copy and pasted here

quote:

Below is some info. 25 mpg is going to be hard to achieve. A diesel or may be one of the new V-6 Eco boost engines are the only options. If you check new truck avg. mpg city, most are below 25mph and are a lot more aerodynamic than a Bronco.

Thank you for your interest in Build A Bronco.com. We have Bronco's that are in different stages. If interested in a “start from scratch” build from the frame up, we have 3 frames that are powder coated and ready to go as well. Let me know your thoughts and we would be glad to help in any way possible. There are several options, feel free to give me a call if is easier to discuss. The work number and my personal cell phone # is listed below.
We presently have a couple real nice "donor" Bronco's but they go fast. Here is a little more information for you. FAQ's.....

What is the Build A Bronco Project Price Range?
Most of the body "off frame" custom builds run in the $29,000 to $50,000 range and take about 6 months to complete. We have also built Bronco’s in excess of $100,000. It all depends on what your dream build entails. If you want a powder coated frame, you would have to start with a body off frame build. We have powder coated and painted frames with or without hoops done and ready to go. With a painted frame you have an option of doing the build with or without removing the body. Not removing the body will lower the cost of your project build. Also, if you are not looking for "new" paint, you can save some money. Some of the Bronco's we find, the paint is in good enough condition that they do not need to be repainted. Air conditioning is about a $3000 additional option. Maybe you are not interested in a complete custom build. We also have Bronco’s available that have not been completely overhauled. Please contact me to see what we currently have available. We have sold Bronco’s from $2,000 on up, again just depends on your Bronco wants and requirements.
Your Bronco Budget
Once we receive your "Bronco Specs" we will itemize an estimate for you. You will know at all times where you are on your Bronco Budget. For example, if your original estimate for the wheel and tire package is $1,500, but you pick out tires for $1,200, then you have a choice to spend the difference elsewhere or have your total price reduced by $300. Or if you pick out some $5000 20" beauties, then your project price was just raised by $3,500. We can Build A Bronco to suit your budget and your personal style!
Down Payment Required
1. 25% Down Payment (non-refundable) to start your build. 2. 25% paid when sit body on frame. 3. 25% paid when the engine starts. 4. 25% paid when complete. Wire transfer is the easiest and cheapest way, but we are able to do credit card payments with a 3% additional charge.
Shipping and Delivery Arrangements
We are able to ship anywhere; Hawaii, Canada, California, etc. We have many quality shippers on file, but have had the best luck with uship.com. Shipping is not included in any of our builds. Let me know what you need from me to move on to the next step and get your Bronco started. Feel free to reply back or call me for further questions.

and we set up a time tomorrow to talk prices, because i was not sure if i needed a custom build or not, so he is helping me out, but he said from what we talked about he doesnt think i will need to do much customization at all, and it will drive the price down a lot

That's about right, have you ever had AC work done on a vehicle? We priced parts for adding it to our old ranger that came without it and it was about 2 grand, maybe a little more. That was just parts. shite ain't cheap.

We went without it, but the truck was only used in town by high school kids so it didn't matter.
