If you are looking for something that grows fast and has soft wood try a tallow tree, they grow anywhere you can't mow and within 3 years will be 8-10' tall. Not to mention they actually have leaves that turn pretty colors in the fall.

In south LA, you should consider cypress, live oak and southern magnolia...excellent wind resistance.
