I want to take up a water sport. I always thought kayaking but it seems like a ton of people around my town are huge standup paddle boarders and I work with a dude whose into all of the water sports and he says SUP is by far the best option.

What are you doing with it? For fishing, kayak wins hands down. I know some people fish out of SUPs, but I look at that as a novelty. If it's just cruising around, go with whatever you like. I would probably try out a SUP before you buy it though, make sure you like it.

Just chilling. I don't really fish. Mainly as an excuse to get outdoors. Which leads me to my other question. I live in an intercostal marsh that's part of a major seaport. I would probably take classes first and take some tours but is either craft better for getting lost and ending up on rivers that could sweep you out onto shipping lanes? I know that sounds paranoid but I am. Part of my job is thinking up worst case scenarios.

kayak gives you more options. Especially if you like checking out new places. I go significant distances (10-30 miles) in my kayak for exercise and just being in the outdoors and checking out what's around the next bend in the river.

There are also a lot of friendly races/ group paddles in the south LA. area that are primarily kayak based events
Check out a few demo days to try both out on the water. That's the best way to decide; or just get both !

Edit: just noticed you're in Athens. Not sure of event types in that area.

I would imagine a kayak would be better for being swept out in shipping lanes. But I would imagine that's pretty unlikely and I wouldn't take that into consideration when making your decision.

If you're not fishing, it's a coinflip. Whichever you think you'll enjoy more. I know they are rigging those SUPs with ice chests and all kinds of stuff these days, you can probably get one however you want.

Kayak is way more versatile and MUCH less expensive. SUPs are insanely overpriced right now, imo, due to them being the hot "new" trend.

$500 for a pretty decent kayak vs. $1300 for a decent SUP. That's a no brainer to me, especially when you're just entering the sport and aren't sure that you'll even stick with it.

how do you plan to transport it? kayaks tend to be heavier than a SUP. for just pure recreation i'd consider the SUP. as far as pricing (contrary to an earlier post) they are about the same. cheap kayaks are the same price as cheap paddle boards, expensive kayaks (excluding hobie) are the same price as expensive paddle boards. as far as the washed out to see part, i've never had that happen

I know it sounds crazy. Our port is actually up river a bit though and all the marsh rivers are a maze. I could easily see a low tide situation where your swept out into the path of a ship. But then, I've never done either.

Probably leaning towards SUP because I know SUP people.
