Spring Bayou Restoration.......

Any of you been keeping up with the recent and past issues with the water levels due to pumping from Spring Bayou? I'm an active member of the SBR team. Local wealthy people have been pumping water out of little river to fill rice ponds for the past several years. It has been negatively affecting lots of people including me. This time of the year with lack of rain and the continuous pumping, has caused super low water levels. We have been trying to change things, but it's hard in Avoyelles Parish to change anything. This goes back to 1951 enabling pumping from Little River. SBR has done great things for Spring Bayou and we want to keep it that way. The police jury finally can through and hopefully changes are upon us. I was born and raised fishing, frogging and hunting in Spring Bayou and also have a camp in Ole' River. If any of you live, hunt, fish or visit Spring Bayou, please consider becoming a member of the restoration team.

Yes. Seems to me the evaporation is a much bigger problem than the pumping. There are bayous near me that are dry that usually have water until September or so.

From my understanding the pumping pulls about 2" of water off the complex and evaporation is around 2'.

I understand about evaporation. But the pumping doubles it. This place, as you know can be and is a great place to fish. These people pumping can MORE than afford to drill water wells for their water supply.

Venture....those numbers are estimated drastically. Not knowing exactly the water depths, where the water is and the "True" evaporation rate. I know your from the AP. But the bottom line is the pumping is killing us. As I mentioned above. It will be hard to change this. But if enough people come together, I think we can change it. It will be hard though!!!!

Maybe not double. I sorry guys. I'm just very passionate about this. Something has to be done. All the evaporation and pumping have been estimated back and forth. I'm just trying to help keep our little paradise alive and the pumping is definitely not helping at all. I know how you like to burn the brim up. If this doesn't stop, there will be limited placed to catch fish. Eventually we'll be limited to the main channels and thats it!!!!

I think the rise and fall is good for the complex overall. Especially one with as much muck as there is in SB.

My wife's dad lived in Mansura until his death 7 years ago. His property was located very close to Spring Bayou.
If you drove up La.1 heading to Marksville you'd take a rt. on Cocoville Rd. then a right on Old River Rd. and follow that down to Lestan Normand Rd. where the old man's property sits. That road was named for his dad who died in the early 90's at 101 years of age.
The family still has the property that is comprised of 2 tracts, one 6.75 acres and the other being 10 acres. It's just sitting idle for years now, but no plans to sell it off are in the works.

I really want a camp there, but there's nothing for my wife and kid to do there.

I have a camp in Ole' River. Boat access only. But we have electricity, and a well. So we're set up. I have caught more bass then ever this year here and SB. Of course due to low water levels. 90% of the time I throw back. My wife loves the camp and my kids all though grown now, loved it also. We've caught more frog than most. It's just nice to have water. Hell, at the end of the day, that's why people are there.

Yeah, it's pretty remote. The old man had internet service and a land line for a phone. When we visited, we'd struggle to find a signal for cellphone service, often having to walk down the gravel road to find one.
Of course the teenagers there with their parents just about bitched the whole time because it was "so lame being here".
Of course this is the millennial crowd that mostly loved to be indoors and hooked up to electronics with an IV to be happy and not like folks my age that loved to be outdoors tearing up the woods and bayous.

Really wish something would be done but we all know the common citizen won't win over the big time doctors and lawyers that have the prime hunting land surrounding Spring Bayou, not in Avoyelles Parish. Not a chance in hell. Also wish something would be done with the number of bass a lot of people are keeping. The SBRT has done a great job getting the bass back into the lake and they are getting hammered pretty hard. Im all for keeping some bass to eat but damn there are some really greedy people when it comes to keeping bass and frogs in that place.
