Need to set up my 9 year old son with a couple of spinning reel/rod for saltwater. Although I don't need the most expensive I do want good quality more than a cheap lesser quality set up. I only started saltwater fishing last year so all my previous experience is with bait casters. Looking for recommendations for reel, rod and line type and weight. We will mostly be fishing the marsh and Big Lake. Thanks.

I'm a Shimano fan boy, so I say whatever Shimano reel works for your budget and PowerPro line.

ETA: forgot a rod, I have All-Star rods on my inshore setups and like them

Pflueger President reel
Allstar rod
PowerPro 30# line

That's my suggestion, at least.

I fish with a penn 450ssg and an off shore angler inshore exteme medium rod 7'6 and 15lb mono and haven't had any problem landing all the fish I fish for.

My dad and bro use shimano 4000 symetres on falcon coastals and they work great and are really smooth.

Both those setups are around $200

Shimano to fit your budget and a lightning rod.

Also, go with the 2500 or 3000 size.

Agreed. No need for a bigger reel for inshore fishing.

Find a Shimano, Okuma, Penn, or Daiwa in your price range and match it with an All Star, Castaway, or lightning rod. That combo should run you somewhere in the $100-$140 range and will handle everything you encounter.

ETA: This Shimano Sedona 2500 is currently on sale at Academy for $50 and seems to fit what you're looking for. Solid reel at a great price.

ETA2: This H2O XPRESS® Ethos 7' M Inshore Saltwater Spinning Rod is on sale for $50 as well at Academy and seems to be a good poppin-cork rod for inshore.

So there you go, $100 for the combo and two great products. Should set him up well for the foreseeable future. If you want another combo, get the same reel and the H2O XPRESS® Ethos 6'10" MH Spinning Rod which should be able to handle spoons, jig heads, or c-rigging bait on the bottom.

If you want to get him started on the cheap those quantum optix reels for $20 are hard to pass up. They seem to hold up pretty damn well for such a cheap reel too. The 30 and 40 sizes should do well for saltwater and the 10 & 20 are great for perch/bass/sac-au-lait

H20 XPRESS

I haven't tried many, but I have tried a few. I just can't get behind the H20 rods. Honestly though, as much as I love Academy, I don't like any of their store brands. I've never had luck with them.

Academy store brand stuff has come a LONG way. I used to feel the same, but the H20 rods, Game Winner Waders and Magellen shirts/clothing have improved dramatically in he past 5 years. Those Ethos rods are worth every penny, and are a bargain on sale. Light weight, sensitive and responsive.

Shimano reels, suffix or braid line. Any rod from a place you know will replace it if cracked. Medium heavy action 7 foot should suffice
